Leadership Statement:

Do you remember the feeling of freedom and pride you experienced the first time you rode a bicycle?   Do you remember the sense of accomplishment you felt?   Learning to ride a two-wheel bicycle is a rite of passage for nearly everyone, but many people with disabilities never realize this achievement.Parents, teachers and therapists describe our results as incredible.  Many of our riders have tried for years to learn to ride a bike without success.  Our recent experience indicates that more than 80 percent of our riders learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle in one week.Success in learning to ride a bicycle is a major milestone in anyone’s life.  When learning has been a struggle the accomplishment and its impact is much greater.  We observe that learning to ride a bicycle results in increased self esteem and confidence, increased peer inclusion, a positive change in family dynamics and improved quality of life through recreation.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

During 2013, iCan Shine (formerly Lose The Training Wheels) partnered with local organizations and individuals, we refer to as our program ‘hosts’,  to conduct almost 100 iCan Bike programs in 32 States and 2 Provinces in Canada serving nearly 2,500 individuals with disabilities.  The impact of learning to ride a bicycle, and our high level of success in helping individuals with disabilities accomplish this feat, continues to drive demand for our programs and fuel our growth. Approximately 80% of the individuals who participate in our iCan Bike programs ride a two-wheel bicycle independently by the end of our five-day programs. The remaining 20% of these individuals make tremendous progress towards this goal and leave our programs accompanied by parents and/or siblings trained as ‘spotters’ to pick up where we leave off! For 2014, we will continue expanding our flagship iCan Bike program throughout North America.  We anticipate that over the next 5 years we will grow to more than 200 bike programs.  We expect to grow in number of programs by 15% to 20% annually! We plan to offer other programs such as an iCan Swim program beginning in 2014.  Stay tuned!
