Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

VISION: Our vision is to have families, schools, and communities that are informed about the importance of prevention, that actively participate in prevention efforts, and who encourage low-risk behavior, and to have significantly higher numbers of healthy, drug-free young people who do the same.

Every year hundreds of local youth make a choice—a choice to use or not use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Substance abuse is a serious health and safety risk for our children and communities. CADY’s goal is to increase healthy choices and behaviors by increasing youth protective factors and resiliency by offering parent engagement and empowerment, positive youth development opportunities, and promoting youth connectedness to their community through innovative collaborations with community partners and stakeholders. Prevention is one of the most important, cost effective practices to address the problem of substance use and juvenile crime prevention as drug-free youth make better choices. Prevention is simply protecting what we value most: our children, and our community, from the harmful effects of illegal drugs and crime.

- Budget:
-
$42,000
- Category:
-
Crime & Legal
- Population Served:
-
Youth/Adolescents only (14 - 19 years)
Program Description:

The Restorative Juvenile Justice (RJ) Program is a community-based educational, relational, and accountability process that provides a second chance for first-time youth offenders in our 18-town catchment area. RJ is the sole court diversion program in our region. It is based on the concept of balanced and restorative justice holding youth accountable for their actions by repairing harm to their victims, providing youth with skills training, AOD education with two online modules specifically addressing alcohol and marijuana, emotional management/conflict resolution, healthy relationships, community service, and mentoring. RJ tenets hold that communities must reach beyond the formal systems of justice, social services, and law enforcement to tap into the wisdom and energies of the entire community to develop solutions to delinquency and victimization; we all have a stake in helping our youth become productive, law abiding citizens and building strong, safe communities. The federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention recognizes the Balanced and Restorative Justice (BAR) Model as an effective strategy for achieving youth accountability and increasing community safety.

Program Long-Term Success:

68 youth completions with recidivism rate of less than 5%

Program Short-Term Success:

Keeps youth out of the court system, breaks the cycle of crime, and allows for local cost containment.

Program Success Monitored by:

Community Health Institute (CHI) conducts an independent evaluation

Program Success Examples:

Our most vunerable, marginalized youth headed for placement have been re-connected to communities. As a result of the program, lives have been transformed, communities have reclaimed their children and children have given back to their community.
