Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
We have continued to build political and advocacy support through grassroots trainings in Cobb County, Savannah, Macon and metro Atlanta. We continue to expand protections for LGBT Georgians through the passage of employment nondiscrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity in the municipalities of Doraville and Clarkston and in large institutions such as Grady Memorial Hospital, where we also successfully advocated for the expansion of spousal benefits to include domestic partners. We have assisted our allies in the HIV/AIDS community by successfully fighting proposed cuts to Georgia's AIDS Drug Assistance Program and passage of legislation that would enable to state prison system to develop a program for HIV testing and discharge planning.

Jeff Graham
Term:

2008
Profile:
Jeff began advocating on LGBT and AIDS related issues as a college student in the mid-1980's in San Antonio, Texas. He relocated to Atlanta in 1989 where he served as the media coordinator for ACT UP/Atlanta for five years and was employed by AIDS Survival Project for 13 years, eleven of those as Executive Director. His past legislative work includes facilitation of the Georgia AIDS Drug Assistance Program Task Force, a legislative workgroup focused on increasing state funding for HIV services, coordinating the local Georgia HIV Prevention Justice Alliance and service on the national board of the CAEAR Coalition, a group that lobbies Congress and the federal Administration on AIDS related issues. He has been active with numerous organizations addressing critical human needs including homelessness, poverty, and the rights of people with disabilities, and has been involved with efforts to promote social justice through his work on campaigns addressing racism, women’s issues and LGBT rights. Jeff has received numerous awards and recognition for both his advocacy and nonprofit work from organizations such as the National Center for Human Rights Education, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Atlanta City Council and Southern Voice's Best of Gay Atlanta. He was named the Grand Marshall of the 1999 Atlanta Pride celebration. He and his partner of 20 years reside in southeast Atlanta.
Leadership Statement:
Georgia Equality exists because of the vision of our founders, the
ongoing support of our many donors and the strength of our conviction
that we can achieve full equality. There are many challenges facing LGBT individuals and families in Georgia. Conservative social values that stigmatize us rural communities, laws that disenfranchise our families and policies that fail to protect us from discrimination in the workplace all add to a sense of hopelessness when it comes to LGBT rights. However, as a long-time activist in Georgia, I am keenly aware of our ability to advance fairness and justice when we unite as a community.

Program Description:
Georgia Equality works to reduce the isolation LGBT people in rural areas sometimes feel by organizing Community Advocacy Groups to improve visibility, provide support networks and educate the local communities about LGBT issues in their hometowns. Our Political Effectiveness workshops train LGBT and allied people to effectively educate their elected officials about LGBT issues. Our Local Ordinance Initiative works with municipalities and businesses to secure that nondiscrimination policies are inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity and to offer domestic partnership benefits and registries throughout Georgia. Voter registration is also a focus.
