Mission Statement
Aleph was founded in 1981 to serve society by: (1) providing critical social services to families in crisis; (2) addressing the pressing religious, educational, humanitarian and advocacy needs of individuals in institutional environments; and (3) implementing solutions to significant issues relating to our criminal justice system, with an emphasis on faith-based rehabilitation and preventive ethics education. In furtherance of that goal, Aleph has created and implemented a host of programs over nearly a quarter century that provide spiritual development and faith-based rehabilitation, alternatives to incarceration for offenders, counseling and assistance to their families, and ethical educational programs inculcating universal truths and concepts common to all of humanity.

Leadership
Rabbi Sholom Lipskar
Profile:
Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar, Chairman and Founder, has built Aleph into the world's foremost agency working with and on behalf of Jews in institutional environments (prison, military, nursing homes, etc.) and their families. Rabbi Lipskar also is the founder and spiritual leader of The Shul, a synagogue and educational complex serving the Jewish communities in Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Indian Creek Village and Surfside, Florida. Rabbi Lipskar's educational background includes years of study at the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva; the Kollel Avreichim graduate school; and the Chabad Lubavitch Graduate School of Theology and Applied Rabbinics. He received his rabbinical ordination in 1968 and, in 1969, was appointed as an emissary by Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, the Lubavitcher Rebbe and world leader of the Chabad Lubavitch chassidic movement. A noted writer, lecturer, educator and expert on the criminal justice system and families, Rabbi Lipskar has been featured at a number of academic symposia on sentencing issues. His innovative proposals on sentencing and criminal justice have been featured in law reviews, journals and other professional publications, and have been adopted by numerous state and federal judges around the country.

Program Description:
Some of the most important services provided by Aleph are for families in crisis, particularly the thousands of innocent spouses and children of inmates.

Pre-sentencing, Aleph prepares proposals for courts across the United States, presenting judges with alternative means to provide punishment while eliminating or minimizing periods of incarceration -- and the accompanying separation from family and productive living.

If and when a family member is incarcerated, Aleph provides religious and educational materials for the prisoner, and sponsors support groups that bring together the spouses of inmates in an effort to compare and discuss their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Professional counselors work with inmates and their families to strengthen and maintain family bonds throughout the crisis of incarceration and to aid in the readjustments required by the incarceration of loved ones.

Aleph is the only Jewish not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing such a wide range of nationwide services to these particularly needy families. All year long, we provide educational programs, counseling and, in cases of extreme need, direct financial support to pay for housing, heat and electricity. Aleph has helped pay for both bar-mitzvahs and funerals. Aleph's in-prison services include religious freedom advocacy, visitations, holiday food packages, educational material, videos, and more. Since 1995, Aleph has provided substantial spiritual support for thousands of Jewish men and women serving in the United States armed forces. With OPERATION: ENDURING TRADITIONS (www.enduringtraditions.org), Aleph supplies thousands of religious books and ritual materials to troops stationed across the United States and around the world. Aleph's mission here is to provide an essential link to community.
