Budget:

Category:

Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

We offer a series of history talks throughout the year, where local authors, historians and special guests present their stories and knowledge to the audience. During the fall/winter months, a Bluegrass Jam is usually held instead, when a band plays outside on the first Sunday of each month, allowing guests to bring chairs and enjoy the music and weather. Every year we anticipate expanding this series by bringing in a variety of authors/speakers and continuing to foster an enjoyment to traditional music native of the area, provided to both residents and visitors of Osceola County.

Haunted Halloween at the Pioneer Village takes place in October. Guests enter the village, greeted with historical information provided by our greeters and are treated to mysterious sights & happenings around the grounds. Reenactors will also appear with stories to tell, or else perhaps as a "vision" from the past, keeping the Village grounds a more family friendly atmosphere. For those looking for something a bit more spooky, the legendary Haunted Trail though the woods of the Steffee Nature Preserve provides visitors with more than they expected to learn of the area's "passed" characters. Guests are treated to something that is not commercial with historical component, creating an event that brings to light another way to celebrate this age old tradition.

Program Description:

The Village's authentic late 1800's buildings will be adorned with the simplicity and charm of early homesteader Christmas decor and aglow with oil lamps and candlelight. Our signature Lanier Cracker House will authentically recreate the era's holiday spirit. Activities will include story telling for children, arts and craft workshops, free refreshments, live holiday music, and Santa Claus on the Lanier House porch for photos. Flowers are planted around the grounds and the decorations are simple in accordance with the history. Each year we plan to keep the experience alive and entertaining.

Budget:
$2,000
Category:
Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other
Population Served:
Children Only (5 - 14 years)

Program Description:

This educational program is designed to promote the area's history by bringing the history to the children. This opportunity is provided to Osceola County teachers who are able to borrow the "trunk" filled with artifacts, books, and other teaching aids to compliment the teacher's lesson plans on the subject. The trunks are provided at no cost to the area teachers, however, a small deposit it requested. This is a great resource to enable teachers to have history become alive, as some schools and classes are not always able to particpate in the field trip program to visit the grounds themselves.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Accomplishments: The Narcoossee Chapter of the OCHS has gained momentum, having increased membership, as well as creating several fundraising activities in order to restore the 1886 schoolhouse. They started a brick project and put on an Italian dinner. They also set up a one day Arts, Crafts and Farmers Market Day. Our annual fundraiser, Dine with the Departed was expanded, so that we were able to have greater seating capacity thereby serving more guests. This year we had two tour groups leaving simultaneously, to tour historic Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitors at the Pioneer Village increased this year, so our income from attendance, gift shop sales and donations were higher. Goals: To continue with our expansion project, which is moving the current Pioneer Village on Bass Road to Shingle Creek Recreational Park on Babb Road, about 1 mile away from the present location. So far the Cadman Residence has been moved from Narcoossee to the new Village. When this home is in place, along with the Citrus Packing plant and bunk house from the current village, we will have thus created the Cadman Citrus Complex. The ""ranch hands house"" was moved from the Partin Property in Kissimmee. This 1930's structure will be the future gift shop. The structures at the current Village will be moved this summer. We are still in the process of creating guided tours for smart phone devices.
