Program Description:
As Nassau County is primarily surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and 3 rivers, we hold 2 major river cleanups each year to help maintain the pristine condition of our community.
Program Long-Term Success:
Through these programs we have attained a greater community understanding of human intrusion on our water resources. Traditionally we collect upwards of 10 tons of refuse. Long time volunteers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of development and subsequent impacts of yard runoff.

International Coastal Cleanup

Program Description:
Annual event in coordination with the Ocean Concervancy. This is the largest one day volunteer event worldwide. On this day, we host approximately 200 volunteers to police the 13 miles of county Atlantic Ocean shoreline.
Program Long-Term Success:
Through volunteer efforts this program helps maintain our pristine coastline while protecting the plethora of wildlife that relys on our clean waters for survival. This includes the protection of endangered species such as a variety of nesting sea turtles.

Program Description:
Various programs by which individuals and organizations can adopt specific areas to police and maintain on a quarterly basis.
Program Long-Term Success:
This program has improved roadway and beach asthetics and removed over 3 tons of litter from public areas around the county. With over 70 miles of roadway and 13 miles of beach maintained by local organizations, this has accentuates the education program through a more accute awareness of human intrussion.
