Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
More than 750 low-income children, ages 6-18, are served annually at our three youth centers. Each center is equipped with a gymnasium, kitchen and classrooms. Because all of our programs are accomplished with a full-time staff of only five and an average workforce of over 600 volunteers, we are able to keep overhead to a minimum. Scope of Programs: - After School/Summer Programs: Offered at all locations weekday afternoons during the school year and all day during the summer months, Youth Encouragement Services' organized programs provide a safe place to play, relax, do schoolwork, participate in sports, develop relational skills and learn moral values. - Tutoring Program: Utilizing hundreds of volunteers from the business community and area colleges, approximately 130 children receive one-on-one homework assistance and tutoring in basic literacy, math and English. After each session, children enjoy a nutritious meal and are provided transportation home. - Back to School Help: When Metro schools discontinued providing basic school materials to disadvantaged children, YES began its "Back to School" program to provide pencils, notebooks, paper, workbooks, etc. to children. Last year, we dispensed school supplies to 200 families. - Summer Camp: Many children who grow up in public housing have never had the opportunity to explore outside their own neighborhood. Most have never built a campfire or gone hiking in the woods. The 17-acre YES camp in Joelton, Tennessee provides these experiences. Each year over 300 children participate in one of our weeklong sessions, to experience the wonders of nature. - The Christmas Store: Provides clothes/toys for over 750 children.

Program Description:
Utilizing hundreds of volunteers from the business community and area colleges, children receive one-on-one homework assistance and tutoring in basic literacy, math and English. Sessions are held on Tuesday evenings. We also offer a daily Learning Lab program at our St. Luke's Center where each child works towards indivualized academic goals. After each session, children enjoy a nutritious meal and are provided transportation home.
Program Long-Term Success:
Because of the high drop-out rate in this community, the ultimate goal is to make certain that that every YES child will graduate from high school.
Program Short-Term Success:
Objectives include (1) to ensure that every YES student will reach and/or maintain a C or above average in all subject areas at school; and (2) to help every student attain mastery of grade appropriate foundational skills.
Program Success Monitored by:
These objectives will be measured by (1) monitoring report cards and progress reports every nine weeks; and (2) goal setting, tracking and assessment of mastery by Directors.

Program Description:
Because many low-income children don't have access or exposure to the arts, YES has recently added an ""Arts and Cultural Enrichment"" program to bring the arts to them. YES has always incorporated art projects and music into our programs, but this new program will take us to a new level by bringing in several talented professionals to nurture the children's interests and talents in three areas: art, music and drama.
