Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
EWH seeks to improve the quality of people’s lives. Our mission is to improve the quality of healthcare in resource-poor communities of the developing world through innovation and effective alliances with partners. In 2010, EWH students worked to repair 767 pieces of equipment and were successful in repairing 75% of the items. As a result, 1.5 million dollars worth of medical equipment that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill is back in service and saving lives.
For the first time this year, SI students placed in Rwanda will work with EWH's Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) program. This will allow SI students to gain in-depth insight into the challenges and daily work of BMETs working in Rwanda's hospitals. EWH will be placing up to 70 SI students in over 30 hospitals in Tanzania, Nicaragua and Rwanda. They will install or work to repair about 1,000 pieces of equipment. The results of this effort will improve the health and save the lives in the developing world.
