Mission Statement
<p>Arcata Press doing business as Saint Paul Almanac was
created with the artistic goal of bringing the diverse Saint Paul community
together by supporting local literary arts through an experiment in democratic
publishing. This mission is primarily accomplished through collaborative
decision-making in publication activities, public readings, and mentorships. We
provide new and established writers and artists with a welcoming annual
forum for stories, poems, memories, photographs, and current events, in
celebration of the rich and diverse life of our city and our shared experiences
of home.</p>

Program Description:
<p><strong>Community Editor Apprenticeship Project<br />
</strong>During the course of 20 weeks and 14 meetings, between January 2011
and June 2011, and repeated again in January 2012 to June 2012, community
editors will:<strong></strong></p><ol><li>Learn to reach into their diverse personal
communities to gather Saint Paul poems and stories, both written and oral</li><li>Help people they gather stories from send in their
best work</li><li>Determine collectively what goes in the <em>Saint Paul Almanac </em>based on a criteria
of quality and inclusivity</li><li> Learn copyediting marks, tools, and resources</li><li>Learn the steps of publishing a book</li><li>Improve their own writing and editing abilities through
critiquing writing in a workshop environment with professional writers</li><li>Build confidence and trust in their abilities
through participating in the apprenticeship process</li><li>Develop relationships with professional and
emerging writers that may not have occurred in any other context</li></ol>

Seven community editors in 2010 were high school students. One student was African American, one student Ghana American, four students Hmong American, and one student was white European American. They learned all of the skills listed above.
