Program Description:

A primary mission of the Bay Area Discovery Museum is to ensure that children from the diverse and varied communities of the Bay Area have access to the Museum and can participate fully in our many educational programs. We want all families to feel welcome and to have a sense of inclusion, safety and respect while visiting the Museum. Through Connections, the centerpiece of our outreach programs, the Museum facilitates 6,000 visits by low income Latino, Asian, and African-American children and their families each year. Participating schools commit to the program for three years and agree to provide focused feedback, so we ensure that we are meeting the needs of the teachers, children, families and the Museum.

The focus of the Connections Program is to support teachers in subsidized preschools by helping them improve their delivery of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) principles to their young students. The Museum is currently partnering with the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley to design a set of tools, which will allow us to evaluate the learning we know happens when children interact with exhibits and participate in programs. We hope to create a sustainable outreach model for impact beyond the region, through its use by other informal learning institutions. As a pre-eminent children’s museum, the Bay Area Discovery Museum is positioned to take the lead in this field.
