Mission Statement

The mission of the Redwood Empire Food Bank is to end hunger in our community. Food insecurity and hunger touches more than 94,000 (nearly one-fifth) Sonoma County residents including an estimated 25,000 children and over 11,000 seniors. The high cost of living (27% above the national average) is a major factor leading to food insecurity. Too many working families at the low end of the wage scale are forced to make tough choices between shelter, health care and adequate food. Disabled individuals living on SSI are chronically in need of food, many seniors require emergency food assistance even with the benefits of Social Security, and there are alarmingly high rates of iron deficiency anemia in very young children in low income neighborhoods of Sonoma County. With the cost of housing, transportation, medical coverage, and utilities continuing to rise much faster than wage rates, food insecurity and hunger are also increasing for low-income people in our area. Of the 50,000 people the REFB provides food for each month: 37 percent of food recipients are children; 12 percent are seniors 48 percent of recipient households include children 39 percent of all households receiving food assistance are working families Over 20 percent of people served experience housing insecurity

David Goodman

Profile:

Executive Director David Goodman Fifteen years ago, I stepped into a food bank for the very first time. When asked why I was there, I replied that I wasn't there to feed hungry people. I said I was there to work hard, and if hungry people benefited, then it would be a job well done. The interviewer replied, "Good." Fifteen years later, I still embrace the idea of working hard, but I wouldn't answer the question in the same way. I have come to believe that it is a privilege to help people in need. I believe that in many ways we owe a debt of gratitude to many of the people who turn to us for help, as they are the people who care for our children, tend to our homes, serve us meals, work our land, and help our parents age with dignity. Finally, there is one belief that I hold above all others - People are in need for one of two reasons, decisions they have made or circumstances beyond their control. In either case, hunger cannot be the price they pay. The ED's Thoughts

Program Description:

Since 1987, the Redwood Empire Food Bank has been improving the lives of people living with hunger through the distribution of food for tens of millions of meals, which has provided the opportunity for families, seniors and children to lead healthier and more productive lives. The REFB is Sonoma County?s largest hunger relief organization and a major food source for 125 charitable organizations, as well as for six smaller food banks in the Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte Counties. An affiliate of America's Second Harvest- The Nation's Food Bank Newtork, the REFB serves as a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of donated food, as well as a wholesaler of staple foods to other non-profit organizations, ensuring a consistent selection of nutritious foods for our partners and clients. The Redwood Empire Food Bank's success is made possible through a collaborative network of programs, services, and volunteers, and through the ongoing generosity of donors and in-kind gifts. Approximately half of the food acquired by the REFB is distributed through the Community Shopping Program, which is a network of 125 community-based, charitable organizations operating 217 different human service programs. The other half of the food distributed reaches the hungry through ten other REFB programs that provide nutritious supplemental food directly to low-income families and those who are most vulnerable to the effects of hunger: low-income children and the elderly. REFB programs include: A Child's Portion (ACP) serves as a bridge between government sponsored nutrition programs for low-income children by providing nutritious supplemental food to underserved two to six year olds. Senior Brown Bag provides low-income seniors supplemental groceries each month. Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides nutritious staple foods and fresh produce for low-income seniors and preschool children. Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) makes available government commodities and donated food monthly to anyone in need. Community Pantry Network (CPN) is a network of REFB supported pantries that distribute groceries to struggling families on a weekly basis, providing a dependable source of supplemental food. Produce Program is a weekly distribution of fresh produce at sites that serve low-income individuals and families. Kids Cafe provides nutritious after school snacks daily to at-risk school age children. Backpack Program gives low-income children a take home bag of produce and other nutritious foods each Friday at their school in order to ensure that they have nutritious food at home over the weekend. Every Child, Every Day - Summer Hunger Initiative fills the summer hunger gap by providing low-income children healthy lunches during the school summer vacation. Megan Furth Harvest Pantry is a mobile farmers market that travels to low-income neighborhoods and provides iron and vitamin C rich fresh produce and nutrition education to low-income children from 0 to 5 years of age who are at risk of anemia. In addition to the distribution of food and the development of hunger relief programs, the REFB educates and informs the community, and is the leading voice on hunger issues. The REFB also serves as an advocate on local, state and federal levels for legislation that will provide long-term solutions to hunger.

Program Long-Term Success:

REFB distributed 8.6 million pounds of food. In the last 3 years we have increased the amount of food reaching the hungry by 30%. We have expanded community involvement in Food and Funds Drives, increasing the amount of food donated by individuals and groups in the last two years by 33%.
