Leadership
Ms. Julie Lewit-Nirenberg
Profile:
Julie Lewit-Nirenberg has been an innovator and visionary in the world of publishing for over thirty years and, more recently, in the not-for-profit sector. As a top executive at several of the nation's most prominent magazines, including Mademoiselle, Mirabella and her own magazine, Lewit-Nirenberg brought new sensibilities and unique marketing opportunities to established and newly launched properties.
In 1996 Lewit-Nirenberg, with her partner, established Lewit & LeWinter publishing company and launched Mode, the first lifestyle/fashion magazine for women who wear size 12 and up. Mode was named Start-up of the Year (AdWeek) and Launch of the Year (Advertising Age) for 1997. In the same year, the partners created Girl, another first, a multicultural teen magazine. In 1999, Lewit-Nirenberg received the "Outstanding Achievement" award by the Ad Council.
In 2003, Lewit-Nirenberg applied her considerable business experience to the not-for-profit world, establishing the first nation wide Prostate Cancer Awareness program with the launch of The Blue Ribbon Prostate Initiative. Her groundbreaking Prostate Cancer awareness ads were featured in O, the Oprah Magazine and published pro bono in Essence, Woman's Day, Car and Driver, Home, Road & Track and others. As a result of these advertisements and a highly visible Manhattan poster campaign, the Initiative achieved national recognition in its first six months.
In early 2006 Lewit-Nirenberg founded the American Prostate Cancer Initiative, a 501(c)(3) organization, whose focus (and mission) is to raise the general public's awareness of prostate cancer as a life-threatening and devastating disease of men in their prime, and to change the course of prostate cancer by supporting other non-profit prostate cancer organizations in their patient education, community outreach, research and advocacy programs.
