Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
HHI offers a new approach to provide excellent care for orphaned and vulnerable children in a simple, cost effective and highly
replicable model. We provide the resources to organizations who in turn provide local, long-term training and support to women to improve early childhood development (and thus health) for children living under severe hardships. Through HHI's assessment, training, and support, organizations can streamline and strengthen their child health programs. HHI builds local capacity to nurture a child's language, social, cognitive and physical development, and most importantly, enhance attachment and bonding. HHI’s training is revolutionary in that it was designed to be culturally adaptable, enabling caregivers to act by improving their care to young children regardless of resources or literacy. HHI recognizes that every culture has games, songs, dance, stories and prayers that
enhance child development and every community, in every culture, wants to nurture its children.
The impact of HHI's trainings has been profound. In post training interviews, orphanage directors reported that children: were sick less often, got healthier faster when ill, thereby needing less medicine. Children gained more weight and were easier to soothe. Caregivers were observed to be more responsive and nurturing, practiced better hygiene, took greater pride in their work and
reported being happier with their jobs.
HIGHLIGHTS
Since February 2006, there have been 1,500+ trainings for 40,000+ women (and men!), who are providing improved care for 135,000+ orphaned and vulnerable children. (Data as of April. '13).

Program Description:
HHI's mission is built on two simple, intertwining principles - empowering women and nurturing children. HHI combines education and empowerment for impoverished women with desperately needed health services for orphaned and vulnerable children. Through HHI's support and training, parents and caregivers improve their ability to nurture a child's language, social, cognitive and physical skills. And most importantly, HHI's specialized training program enhances attachment and bonding of infants to caregivers, which establishes the base for all future relationships. The impact of HHI's trainings has been profound. Orphanage directors report that after introduction of the HHI program, children are sick less often, require less medication, gain weight and are easier to soothe. General working conditions in the orphanages also improves. Caregivers are observed being more nurturing and responsive to the babies and they show greater personal confidence and pride. Caregivers also transfer their new skills and knowledge to their lives outside of their work, improving the nurturing of their own children and others in the community.
Program Long-Term Success:
Since HHI began operations in February 2006, we have led 119 trainings in India and one in Russia - training 1,691 women who now provide improved care for over 14,269 orphaned or vulnerable children.
