Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Established in 1989, the Wyoming Community Foundation is one of more than 700 community foundations in the United States. We work with a wide range of donors to create permanent funds to meet critical needs; we work with advisors to grow these funds; and we use our expertise in community building to grant the earnings from these funds to nonprofits across Wyoming. The Wyoming Community Foundation is a statewide nonprofit organization with total assets in excess of $72 million. In 2010, the Community Foundation awarded more than $2.9 million in grants to nonprofit organizations across Wyoming.

Leadership Statement:
With a strong recovery underway from the 2008 downturn, we were able to mostly recover our fund levels from 2007. New funds brought our total assets to a new high of $71 million. Probably most significant for the long term growth and stability of the Foundation was the board’s decision to move to the utilization of a fund manager.
Mason Investment Advisors, of Reston, Virginia is our new investment fund manager. We are now one of fourteen community foundations for which they manage funds. They demonstrated an in depth understanding of the community foundation business model.
As you may recall, in years past we were successful in converting several private foundations and a trust into donor advised funds. In 2010, that trend continued with the conversion of two large private foundations into donor advised funds. We are now actively marketing the services we offer to donors whose foundations may not be of adequate size to continue to support staff, or they may not wish to try to keep up with ever changing IRS requirements. They are finding a donor advised fund can accomplish their charitable giving goals while relieving them of the administrative burdens of tax returns, compliance with the Patriot Act, payment of excise taxes, etc.
We now have thirty-two members of the Key Club, which is our way of recognizing and honoring those professional advisors who have worked with a client to direct a fund into the WYCF. These professional advisors are an increasingly important part of the Foundation’s growth.
Last, I would be remiss if I did not recognize the work of Wyoming Women’s Foundation on behalf of women and girls in Wyoming. They celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2010. They are effective advocates working to improve the economic lives of women and girls in Wyoming, and we’re proud of their work.

Program Short-Term Success:
The recently created Wyoming Nursing Workforce Center has awarded over $48,000 to health care organizations around the state.
The center was created through a partnership of state and national funders to address the issue of nursing workforce retention in Wyoming. In November 2008, the center announced that it would be accepting proposals for projects that identify, develop, and test unique and innovative approaches to improving nursing work places that fit with health care delivery in Wyoming. Of the 11 proposals submitted, six have been funded. The grant recipients are:
Campbell County Memorial Hospital’s Preparing Clinical Preceptors for Wyoming Healthcare Facilities project (Gillette) – This project will serve acute care and long term care facilities in Gillette, Sheridan, and Buffalo to redesign a preceptor training program in Gillette.
Niobrara Health & Life Center’s Retention and Recruitment program (Lusk) – The project will identify and recruit collaborative partners to create a potential model for statewide critical access hospital rural healthcare nursing exposure, recruitment, and retention, while focusing on building RN confidence and competence.
Powell Valley Health Care, Inc.’s CNA Mentorship program (Powell) – study conducted at PVHC in 2006 showed that nurses who participated in a mentoring program had a lower turnover rate than those who did not. The PVHC will implement a similar program for CNAs to see if similar results can once again be obtained.
Wyoming Department of Health’s Succession Plan for Public Health Nursing (Cheyenne) – A large number of nurses will be retiring from public health nursing within the next three to five years, and a specific succession plan must be put in place. The project will focus on recruitment and retention as well as on succession.
Wyoming Medical Center’s Improving Nurse Retention program (Casper) – Studies show that nurse residency programs aide recruitment and retention of graduate nurses. The Wyoming Medical Center has graduated three classes of nurse residents, with the average program lasting eight weeks. Recent literature, however, suggests that a year-long program would be more effective, and the center will create a program that will contribute to a retention rate of at least 90 percent by nurse residents’ second year of practice.
Wyoming Nurses Association’s Nursing Leadership Institute (Gillette) – Nursing leadership education and current leadership affect workforce retention. The Department of Employment data on a recent nursing survey verified that a major dissatisfaction of Wyoming nurses involves issues with nursing management. The leadership institute will be based on utilizing experienced, proficient, and expert nursing leaders through a leadership experience. It will include a mentoring piece to provide support and guidance during the program.
