Board Orientation & Education ?
Why does this matter? Without clarity around their responsibilities and expectations, board members are not positioned to succeed. They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. BoardSource recommends that every new board member participate in a formal orientation process, and that all board members sign a pledge or agreement committing to their board service and to all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with service. Ideally, board members also should participate in a formal governance training program prior to serving on a board.

Does the board conduct a formal orientation for new board members and require all board members to sign a written agreement regarding their roles, responsibilities, and expectations?
NO
CEO Oversight ?
Why does this matter? Oversight and management of the chief executive is one of the board’s most important legal responsibilities. The CEO or executive director is the board's single employee, and - just like any other employer/employee relationship - regular and written assessment is critical to ensuring that the chief executive and board are communicating openly about goals and performance. BoardSource recommends that boards conduct formal, written reviews of their chief executives on an annual basis, which should include an in-person discussion with the chief executive and distribution of the written evaluation to the full board.

Has the board conducted a formal, written assessment of the chief executive within the past year?
NO
Ethics & Transparency ?
Why does this matter? A commitment to handling conflicts of interests is essential to creating an organizational culture of transparency. Boards should create and follow a policy for identifying and handling conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived. BoardSource recommends that organizations review the conflict-of-interest statement and require signed disclosures from all board members and senior staff on an annual basis.

Have the board and senior staff reviewed the conflict-of-interest policy and completed and signed disclosure statements within the past year?
YES
Board Composition ?
Why does this matter? The best boards are composed of individuals who bring a variety of skills, perspectives, backgrounds, and resources to tackle the complex and strategic challenges confronting their organizations. BoardSource recommends that boards commit to diversity and inclusion by establishing written policies and practices, which include strategic and intentional recruitment of diverse board members, continual commitment to inclusivity, and equal access to board leadership opportunities.

Does the board ensure an inclusive board member recruitment process that results in diversity of thought and leadership?
YES
Board Performance ?
Why does this matter? Boards need to regularly assess their own performance. Doing so ensures that they are being intentional about how they govern their organization, which is a critical component of effective board leadership. BoardSource recommends that a board conduct a self-assessment of its performance a minimum of once every three years to ensure that it is staying on track with its roles and responsibilities.

Has the board conducted a formal, written self-assessment of its performance within the past three years?
NO

Program Description:

Through our grassroots network of impassioned volunteers known as the Climate Leadership Corps, our organization brings the reality of and solutions to the climate crisis to strategic countries. Our Climate Leaders, a cadre of passionate climate volunteers and educators, deliver presentations in schools, homes, churches, workplaces and government forums. These presentations both educate people about climate change and build local networks of climate activists who work in their own communities and countries demanding solutions. Our Climate Leaders are pivotal agents for change. These volunteers are among our most informed, dedicated and eager-to engage members. Each of them has been personally trained by Chairman Al Gore to deliver a multimedia slide show featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The slide show is continually updated to convey the scope and urgency of the climate challenge, drawing from his latest book, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis and other endeavors. Climate Leaders add personal stories to their presentations, specifically describing how they woke up to the climate crisis and why they have chosen to join in and lead the movement. This aspect of the program is of particular value since research indicates the importance of trusted messengers in climate change communications. Learning about the impacts of climate change from a member of one’s own cultural community is quite powerful. Our staff in the U.S., as well as our branches in Australia, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico, support the Climate Leadership Corps with information and tools necessary to achieve their mission. Through the Climate Leader Web Portal, Climate Leaders download the most recent version of the slide show, obtain factsheets on topics relevant to their presentations, manage presentation requests and stay connected with each other.

Evidence of Impact

The Climate Reality Project, founded by Al Gore, is charged with educating the public about the science and solutions of climate change. Their work includes mainstream outreach, like Inconvenient Truth, local education, training organizers, and much more. They have had a huge impact on swaying public opinion around the relevance of climate change and spurring people toward action.

Raising Public Awareness
The Climate Reality Project continues to do a good job in getting people to pay attention to the climate issue. They send out regular messages that include legislative alerts. Their international "24 hours" program, which I believe aired sometime in this winter, had good video clips and interviews with people affected by climate change throughout the world. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The Climate Reality Project, founded by Al Gore, defends and publicizes the science of climate change and presents real solutions to the problem. First, an Inconvenient Truth had a tremendous impact regarding public opinion on climate change. I have closely researched and followed polling on this for years. Also, the Climate Project, which trained organizers and spokes-people for climate change, is highly regarded by professionals I know who have attended their sessions and peer organizations. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Their effort to have local educational sessions about climate change and its impacts is really important. While lots may be happening in some areas, others are climate science deserts, and the work of the Alliance for Climate Protection to change that is crucial. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Their impact is educating the public about the evidence and science behind climate change. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The Climate Reality Project builds on legacy of Al Gore's work. Other

Organizational Strengths

The Climate Reality Project is led by Al Gore. He is not only extremely dedicated, but he is well connected and in many ways has become the face of the climate change movement. One expert points out that Al Gore is sometimes polarizing, so it is fortunate that the Climate Reality Project is also led by Maggie Fox. The organization has a large network of activists and a great training model for adding more to the ranks. They also have a great view into the political system and are sure to share information with their constituents.

Effective Model
They have a strong network of climate activists around the country. They're able to offer good connections to the political machinery, with legislative alerts, etc. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Al Gore is a tireless and dedicated leader. The organization occupies a unique space in the NGO community and can speak with a knowledgeable voice that has no direct self-interest in the outcome. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have proven success and great tools. Their strength is in their use of the "train the trainer" model for advocates. Other
Great Leadership
While Al Gore may be extremely polarizing, he's become the face of the climate change movement. For an organization to have him at the helm is both a huge strength and a major weakness. Having Maggie Fox involved is also fantastic for them; she has Senator Udall's ear. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have strong leadership and outreach. Nonprofit Senior Staff

Areas for Improvement

The Climate Reality Project is in the process of rebranding itself, and experts have mixed opinions on their approach. The organization’s rebranding has included a name change; they are formerly known as the Alliance for Climate Protection. This is partially due to the polarizing nature of Al Gore. One expert points out the organization should continue to celebrate Gore’s role in the organization and not hide it. Another expert simply notes that this is the reality for the organization. Both agree that as a result of the drastic branding change, the organization is now needing to re-establish itself. The Climate Reality Project may also want to consider changing the way they outreach to their constituents. Tier email communications are often donation requests, and they may be over-saturating their audience with that message. They should also consider outreaching to a broader audience.

Examine Branding Choices
They keep changing their name and adding in new projects, so they are losing their brand identity. With each new name, it takes a minute to realize that it's Al Gore's group again. They ought to be consistent and just stick with one name. I don't think there's any reason to hide the fact of Gore's leadership. He's a hero for what he's done, and they ought to put him on center stage. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Al Gore has become a divisive figure politically. The organization recently underwent an overhaul. They used to be known as the Alliance for Climate Protection, and is still reestablishing itself. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Improve Outreach Practices
Their email blasts are often about making a donation and, quite honestly, turn people off because of that. They should focus on the message and only once in a while do a blast about donating. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They should expand their presence to reach a broader audience. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They need to focus on deploying their resources to speaking in communities and before audiences that can be influential on climate policy. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Revisit Strategy
No group has disappointed people more than this one. The amount of money spent compared to the actual impact is appalling. The original media effort on coal was feisty. Al Gore's early speeches and film/slideshow were amazing. But for at least three years, this group has disappointed. There is absolutely no way that ACP should be on this list while others like Chesapeake Climate Action Network or Southern Alliance for Clean Energy are left off. Maggie Fox is too influenced by Democratic Party politics. She should move on to a new position and let an independent leader take over. Al Gore is largely missing in action except for his periodic speeches and cruises. Where is he? Our hero has gone missing. Kevin Curtis is one of our greatest strategists. He needs to be unleashed to help the ACP go places it has yet to go. I apologize for being so blunt, but there is no transparency with this group. Other
