Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Our second Science ‘UnSummit’, in conjunction with the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC, was held April 24-25th 2012. The ‘UnSummit’ brought together various stake-holders that are passionate about the future of science. Our first ‘Science ‘UnSummit’ 2010, 'Shifting the Effort/Reward Ratio in Science’ was held Oct 23-25th, 2010 as part of the inaugural USA Science and Engineering Festival, organized by Larry Bock.

The 2010 ‘UnSummit’ included participants from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Academies of Science, the National Science Foundation, and the National Post-doc Association, as well as book authors, scientists, engineers, and thought leaders. We have expanded to thought leaders from funding agencies and government offices (eg National Institutes of Health, the Council on Competitiveness, and the National Science Foundation), building on the success of our open space approach.

Our ‘Third Space’ programs have proven to be exceptionally informative.

(Third Space: It’s not home, it’s not work, it’s where we gather together to ‘create.’) Named after Ray Oldenburg’s ‘Third Place” concept, Yámana Science and Technology’s Third Space dialogs are interactive events designed to bring out current patterns of thinking regarding the future of science, and to prompt new ideas and new ways of looking at the future(s) we wish to create.

In Oldenburg’s writings, Third Places are where influential community decisions are made in an egalitarian atmosphere of creative discourse. They are usually informal locations such as pubs, barber shops, or street corners, and are distinguished from the relative isolation of the first place (home) and the second place (work).

Our Third Space interactive events are designed in three parts. First, the presenter(s) share a short biographical sketch to bring the presentation into personal space. Current trends and statistics regarding employment, workplace dynamics, and other aspects of science in the United States are then presented. The final part entails an interactive exercise to explore possibilities for the future of science and the systems which support it, and each person’s individual place within the constructs of science.
