Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
A recent program evaluation illustrates the positive changes that take place in the lives of the youth and families Atlantic Street Center serves:
<ul><li>Of the educationally at-risk students who took part in our services, 80% made academic progress, 91% showed improved school attendance, and 89% increased their social skills.</li><li>100% of the young children participating in our early learning program graduated from the program and transitioned into a formal pre-school or center based child care.</li><li>75% of individuals participating in mental health counseling strengthened their coping abilities.</li><li>90% of the parents participating in our family support services improved their parenting skills, 94% increased their knowledge of age-appropriate youth development, needs and behaviors, and 90% participated in their children’s learning.</li><li>By the end of our five-week summer school program, 74% of the students were reading one grade level above their current grade and the remaining 26% were reading at grade level.</li></ul>

Leadership Statement:
Edith C. Elion has been with Atlantic Street Center for more than 30 years. She has served as the Executive Director of Atlantic Street Center since April 2002. Prior to that, she served as Associate Director for 14 years, and provided direct services for ten years before that. She attended the University of Washington where she earned a B.A. degree in Social Welfare and a Masters degree in Social Work. She is a licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as a Practicum Instructor for the University of Washington School of Social Work.

Program Description:
<div>Counseling Services: Our counseling services program addresses mental health and life issues that often accompany challenging family circumstances. The goal of our counseling program is to ensure that children have the tools and resources they need to cope with the issues in their lives. Services include: -counseling and guidance -problem/conflict resolution -needs assessment -help with basic needs (shelter, food) -resource identification -support groups -social skills classes -therapy for abused/neglected children -family therapy/family referrals to other services In 2008, our Counseling Program served 465 children, youth & families. </div>

<div>Early LearningProgram: The goal of our Early Learning Program is to promote early literacy, language development, and school readiness. Services and activities focus on promoting learning and language development through the use of books and toys; helping parents learn how to read and play with their young children; teaching parents how to integrate learning into each day; and preparing children to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. In 2008, our Child Development Program served 80 children and their caregivers. </div>

<div>Youth Development Program: Our Youth Development Program focuses on helping children and youth acquire the social and academic skills they need to succeed in life. We provide tutoring, social skill groups, leadership development, summer school program, and social/recreational opportunities, all of which are designed to help children and youth manage anger, resist peer pressure, and improve their academic and social competencies. In 2008, our Youth Development Program served 389 youth. </div>

<div>Family Centers: Our two Family Centers provide education, social support, and family activities to strengthen and empower families. Our services are culturally relevant to the neighborhoods we serve. Services include: -Parenting classes for parents and guardians of all ages -Support groups -Citizenship and ESL classes -Financial literacy classes -Community events/festivals -Computer labs -Personal health/fitness classes -Drop-in youth recreation center -Advocacy and referral -Eviction prevention In 2008, our two Family Centers collectively served 2,168 families. <br /></div>
<div>Holiday Assistance helps low-income families celebrate the holidays through our Toy Store and Adopt-A-Family programs. Each year, we provide gifts to approximately 300 families in our community. </div>
