Evidence of Impact

Climate Solutions is headquartered in the state of Washington and works primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Their regional work includes working closely with the business community to develop environmentally sound strategies, advocating in the policy arena, and developing and modeling strong climate change mitigation solutions. This work has been powerful and has led to deep changes throughout the West Coast. Climate Solutions is also an influential player nationally influencing the conversation, both as a regional model, and by directly engaging Congress members and other national players.

Regional Focus, National Reach
Climate Solutions is regional rather than national, since they are based in Washington state. They have made a tremendous difference in moving the climate debate and action agenda forward in Washington and the West Coast through forums such as the Western Climate Initiative (WCI). If you take a look at the climate actions featured on the Washington Department of Ecology website, many (possibly most) of these were made possible by the active participation of Climate Solutions. They are also active in policy conversations at the national level and with members of Congress, primarily from Pacific Northwest states. They have critical thinking skills and a strong understanding of regional energy dynamics, economies, and their environmental policies. Climate Solutions makes connections across diverse interest groups (e.g. public, private, government, and advocacy organizations). They are working regionally and also shaping the national conversation with real on-the-ground facts, figures, and impacts - examples that show how solutions can work for multiple interests. Other
Climate Solutions is a regional, U.S. Northwest organization that focuses on developing business partnerships and educating regional businesses on clean technology and greenhouse gas mitigation. The over-arching vision is achieving a clean energy economy. They work directly with business leaders and policymakers, and they have numerous success stories. Their emphasis is on implementing effective solutions on a case-by-case basis and spreading their work to engage more business participation. They also work to emphasize the economic benefits, as well as the environmental ones. Researcher and Faculty
Climate Solutions is the premier group in the Pacific Northwest working on climate change. Right now, they are doing some of the best work on coal exports in the country. They work at a regional level with mayors, all the way up to issues of national importance. Groups like this are pivotal to the issue because in the absence of federal legislation, we need to build up efforts in localities, states, and regions. Other
They have had an influence on regional decision makers. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Modeling Solutions
Climate Solutions has impacted the sector through their leadership of the Northwest Biocarbon Initiative, identifying opportunities for carbon sequestration in forestry and agriculture. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Climate Solutions is one of a handful of regionally-based nonprofits that influence national thinking and policy. They demonstrate practical approaches and solutions through initiatives and projects taken from the conceptualization stage to implementation and evaluation. Two examples of this process are Climate Solutions' work on sustainable aviation biofuels and their work with the agriculture and ranching community. Foundation Professional

Organizational Strengths

Climate Solutions has a talented group of staff members. They are known to be quite knowledgeable in the field and enthusiastic. Their work is grounded in strong scientific research and the organization’s strong relationship building skills disseminate that information. They have worked to develop connections with a wide range of stakeholders, including those in agriculture, the tech industry, and in academia.

Strong Organizational Structure
They have wide connections across agriculture, industry, academia, and policy. Climate Solutions is very efficiently run; dollars donated truly go to on-the-ground work in communities and legislative chambers. Other
Climate Solutions has an enormously talented staff with expertise, experience, knowledge, and the ability to influence private and public sector leaders. They also have a sophisticated and able Board of Directors. Foundation Professional
Dynamic Programs
They work with major corporate sponsors and strategic partnerships, as well as individual donors for support. They have developed an effective Business Leaders for Climate Solutions consortium with over 1,000 members. They also work on regional policy issues related to phasing out fossil fuel dependence. Researcher and Faculty
Climate Solutions has strong research. They are also good at organizing rural constituencies, as well as the high-tech sectors. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Talented Staff
They have a very capable and energetic staff. The organization has a strong scientific foundation. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have top flight staff, some of whom are nationally recognized in their fields. Other
This is one of greatest regional groups. Gregg Small is a spectacular Executive Director, and KC Golden rivals Bill McKibben as one of our eloquent story tellers, leaders, and visionaries. This group's ability to impact local, state, and federal policies is terrific. Their fight against the export of coal is laudatory. They have galvanized donors, artists, and a range of constituencies, and they're tying up coal in a very impressive way. They don't stop there. Their push for workable solutions is exceptional. Other

Areas for Improvement

Experts would like to see Climate Solutions do more of the work that has made them an impactful organization. For example, one expert would like them to refresh an informative piece of research that they’ve done in the past. They could renew their work by providing a comprehensive update on the climate change impacts in the Pacific Northwest. They could also work to solidify their potential for policy change by strengthening their relationships with decision makers who are likely to remain regardless of the election cycle. They could also work on better telling their story. They could do this by working on publicizing their work and more deeply engaging in social media.

Improve Operational Capacity
It would be easier said than done, but they should secure more operating dollars to be able to keep key staff and expand services. They should also solidify their connections with policymakers and opinion leaders, both regionally and nationally, that stay secure beyond possible transitions resulting from fall elections. Other
They could work on keeping up with technology in order to have maximum impact in their use of social media. They could also improve their overall financial capacity in order to have the resources to meet the enormous scope of the problems Climate Solutions addresses. Foundation Professional
Update Reporting
Perhaps they should broaden the participation of climate scientists on their Board of Directors. The documents they provide on the scientific basis of climate change are good but a bit dated. A comprehensive update on the impacts to the Pacific Northwest would be useful. They could review areas, such as water resources, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, extreme weather, and similar areas. Researcher and Faculty
Improve Marketing & Communication
They could use more publicity for their work. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They need more communications support. Other
