Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Climate Solutions is mobilizing our networks to directly challenge fossil fuel dependence, while demonstrating that the alternatives are real, accessible and irresistible. We work to accelerate investment in climate-friendly projects and infrastructure and demonstrate nationally-significant models of public policy and private sector synergy. Highlights from the past year include:

NEW ENERGY CITIES: We released Powering the Clean-Energy Future from the Ground Up, a report on 34 communities that are pioneering successful city-led clean- energy innovation and inspiring emulation across the country.

NORTHWEST BIOCARBON INITIATIVE: We partnered with a diverse set of conservation organizations to show how forests, farms and businesses can mobilize biological carbon resources to reach Target 350 by creating model policies and practices capable of replication in nations and regions around the world.

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUELS: We deepened our work to move the aviation industry beyond conventional petroleum fuels toward sustainably-produced 2nd generation biofuels. Our Northwest stakeholder process was extremely successful and is seen by many as a model for replication across the planet. In 2012, we provided coaching and support to similar efforts to advance aviation biofuels in Brazil.

STATE POLICY LEADERSHIP: Climate Solutions worked with a
coalition of clean-energy advocates to preserve the integrity of Washington State’s Clean Energy Initiative, I-937, during the 2012 legislative session, as well as holding off other anti-climate efforts like elimination of the State Energy Office and greenhouse gas reporting program.

SOLUTIONS STORIES: We continued to capture and communicate success stories of inspired
individuals, vibrant organizations and innovative projects that are growing the reality of our region’s clean energy economy.

Areas for Improvement
Experts would like to see Climate Solutions do more of the work that has made them an impactful organization. For example, one expert would like them to refresh an informative piece of research that they’ve done in the past. They could renew their work by providing a comprehensive update on the climate change impacts in the Pacific Northwest. They could also work to solidify their potential for policy change by strengthening their relationships with decision makers who are likely to remain regardless of the election cycle. They could also work on better telling their story. They could do this by working on publicizing their work and more deeply engaging in social media.
