Mission Statement

The Terma Foundation's mission is to ensure that a generation of Tibetan children survive and thrive. Terma gets clinical care, equipment and medicines directly to remote villagers and nomads, saving thousands of lives annually through primary healthcare, screening and treatment for preventable life-threatening diseases, access to essential foods and medicines, and by providing basic health education.

Dr. Nancy Harris

Profile:

Dr. Nancy Harris has worked for ten years to reverse life-threatening health conditions for almost one million Tibetan children. Dr. Harris simultaneously completed her BA and MS in Biology from Yale and is a graduate of Stanford Medical School. Seeking a deeper philosophical base, Dr. Harris studied Chinese medicine in Beijing, and from there, visited Tibet. In 1993 Dr. Harris procured a seed grant to do what no other group had previously done-begin documenting the threat to child survival on the Tibetan Plateau. The data revealed that undernutrition affected half the children, while nearly 70 percent had rickets. Dr. Harris' findings were published in The New England Journal of Medicine, February 2001. Dr. Harris initiated collaborations between American teams and Tibetan health workers, village elders, and women's groups. Today, Dr. Harris' organization, The Terma Foundation, operates six health programs in Tibet.
