December 2013)

Budget:
$400,000

Population Served:

Program Description:

We own and operate the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary located on 186 acres in southwest Texas. The Sanctuary is home to more than 500 monkeys — vervets, macaques, and baboons — most of whom have been rescued from grim conditions in research laboratories, roadside zoos, and private possession as "pets." We provide them with an enriched environment as close to the wild as possible and with minimal human interference.   Nonhuman primates are intelligent animals with complex behavioral and social needs. Yet almost all rescued primates arrive at our Sanctuary having been deprived of the opportunity to meet these needs. Many have never had contact with other nonhuman primates; never had a proper, nutritious diet; and never had ample space to roam, climb, play, and just be monkeys.

Program Long-Term Success:

Program Short-Term Success:

Managing a large, free-range Sanctuary is not only extremely expensive, it is also a long-term commitment as many of our primates can live up to 30 years. Captial projects that enhance our ability to rescue and rehabilitate primates in need are ongoing.

Program Success Monitored by:

Program Success Examples:

Welcomed more than five new residents who were previously kept as “pets." Rescued two groups of macaques retired from the research industry. None had ever seen/felt grass, sunlight, or an enriched environment.  Completed construction of a new 2.5-acre baboon enclosure complete with shelters and enrichment for our group of baboons.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information
A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

Born Free USA campaigns nationwide for policy change to protect animals, and we have a long history of success in captive and exotic wildlife issues. We have been responsible for the introduction and passage of important anti-cruelty and wildlife conservation legislation at the state and federal level as well as much-needed regulatory reform. Born Free USA is a nongovernmental observer participant at the Meetings of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), an international agreement between governments that regulates the trade in wild animals and plants to ensure that international trade does not threaten their survival. Our efforts have resulted in global protection for elephants, rhinos, bears, tigers, and many other endangered species. We also activate the public with information and calls to action that allow them to make a difference for animals.
