They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. Program Description:

Woodcraft's Nvision Afterschool Program provides at-risk youth with relevant, interesting, fun activities that improve academic performance, health and fitness, and social and life skills, while also preparing teens for college and/or the workforce beyond. Engaging urban youth (who are often focused on mere survival) for a meaningful length of time presents a particular challenge. Nvision has proven success in retaining this target population through a wide range of club themes, including drama, dance (from Latin to hip hop), fine arts (e.g., music, mural painting), team sports; individual fitness activities (e.g., skateboarding, low-rider bicycling, martial arts and yoga), and technology-based clubs (e.g., videography, cartooning/animation, etc.), just to name a few. A recent addition to Woodcraft's cadre of clubs that has successfully engaged older students, for example, is Robotics. This club allows students to enhance their skills and knowledge in science, math, pre-engineering and technology to configure high-tech robots. Students unlock advanced concepts of engineering as they design and construct radio-controlled robotic devices that can lift, throw, climb, gather, and expand the boundaries of experimental intelligence. The student-created robots are then entered in local and state "challenges" to test their skills. All clubs incorporate a variety of participatory "disguised learning" experiences. These exercises may not be recognizable to students as educational assistance, but are rich in academic content and aligned with the California Content Standards for Literacy & Language Arts, Math, Physical Education and Visual/Performing Arts. Nvision is supplemented with weekend and summer activities, such as competitions, exhibits, and field trips, which serve as incentives for consistent and long-term (6 months or longer) participation and also allow for parent involvement.

Program Description:

Woodcraft Rangers serves over 15,000 youth annually through afterschool clubs and programs, plus camping activities. Children are referred to camp by schools and community agencies. For many youth, a trip to camp offers a rare chance just to be children, away from the severe demands and stressed of inner-city life. Blue Sky Meadow Camp offers specialized camping programs: leadership development, outdoor education, family camps and recreation. Camp activities include swimming, hiking, archery, low and high ropes courses and a 40 foot climbing wall. An on-site petting zoo lets children experience and care for animals. Positive attention from counselors is often cited by children as the best feature of Blue Sky Meadow. Woodcraft offers traditional after school academic and sports activities, plus unique courses designed around input received from students and their families such as web design, silk-screening, photography, martial arts, model building and multi-media production. Other clubs include computer, dance, photography, drama, science and math, music, urban arts, model assembly and sports.

Currently, enriching after-school and camping programs are provided to over 15,000 at-risk young people annually, at 70 public schools in high-need neighborhoods of Los Angeles County.
