Program Description:
AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) is a non-profit organization recognized at both the national and local level for providing free basic needs services to people impacted by the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. Founded by four friends in 1983, APLA is a community-based, volunteer-supported organization with the mission of: improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease; reducing the incidence of HIV infection; and advocating for fair and effective HIV-related public policy. APLA offers 30 programs and services to over 9,600 low-income people with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. In addition to connecting people with HIV/AIDS to housing, home health care, public benefits, mental health counseling, professional dental care, transportation and nine different food pantries, APLA also provides HIV prevention programs (many targeting high-risk youth and substance users) designed to reduce the incidence of HIV infection. APLA?s HIV prevention work includes community organizing, peer health education, research and evaluation, mobilizing HIV prevention leadership through summits, conferences and trainings, and social marketing campaigns. As a result of APLA?s proven track record with providing direct services, capacity building and assistance to local and national HIV/AIDS service providers, APLA is currently supporting HIV/AIDS initiatives on a global scale, with collaborative projects in India and Latin America. We will also be expanding to provide technical assistance to non-governmental organizations in China. The Government Affairs Division at APLA covers a wide range of activities intended to educate the public, elected officials and other policymakers about the critical needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. Our efforts include grassroots trainings and communications, visits to Congressional offices, informing and educating decision-makers at all levels of government, public speaking and testimony and working with coalitions of other HIV/AIDS advocates to achieve high-quality care, treatment and prevention.
