Mission and Programs

Mission

The mission of HLI is to create effective opposition to the culture of death around the world.  HLI works to promote and defend the sanctity of life and family around the world according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church through prayer, service, and education. In fulfilling this mission HLI strives to train, organize, and equip pro-life leaders around the world. As a non-profit, educational apostolate, HLI takes a total approach to life issues from the moment of natural fertilization to the moment of natural death. While HLI is completely faithful to the Holy Father and the Magisterium, HLI is also ecumenical and works with people of all faiths to advance the cause of life.

Additional Comments from the Organization

Why HLI? The babies are the reason why. Everything HLI does is dedicated to saving lives and strengthening families throughout the world. Because we are the only pro-life presence in many countries, and because the culture of death is active on so many fronts, HLI's global approach to the life issues is indispensable.

Who We Are

HLI is the largest international pro-life organization in the world. It exists to fight the evils of abortion, contraception, sex education and the family breakdown and also to bring the good news of the Gospel of Life to the nations.

Goals and Results

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 2008

  1. Human Life will be respected in Asia/Oceania in all its stages, Church and community leaders will be knowledgeable about life issues, the youth will be empowered to live in a way that respects their lives and the lives of others.
  2. Humanae vitae Initiative ? The Humanae vitae initiative has been an amazing success. HLI received over 6,700 pledges from clergy, seminarians, and the laity in support of Pope Paul VI?s encyclical, Humanae vitae. HLI also heard stories of how the initiative touched people?s lives in personal ways, including a heartwarming one from a former priest who was one of the original dissenters of Humanae vitae in 1968. In signing HLI's Humanae vitae pledge for the laity, this man found a way to publicly renege his dissent and finally assent to this important Church teaching. You can read the entire story here: http://www.hli.org/sl_2008-08-01.html
  3. Anti-Condom Billboard Campaign ? With billboards promoting condoms all over Africa, HLI's affiliate in Tanzania sought to tell the truth about this ineffective method of preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS with a few billboards of its own. The billboards contained an image of a skeleton with the words "Faithful Condom User" written in English and the native Swahili. HLI promotes abstinence as the best way to prevent AIDS, while revealing the deceptive nature of condom promoters. These billboards caused quite a commotion among proponents of the culture of death in the region and the campaign was the front-page story of the main newspaper in Tanzania! HLI?s affiliate leader in Tanzania even received threats for his courageous stand for life.

Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning October 1, 2008

  1. Regional Coordinators ? HLI has big plans for this year?s regional coordinators program. These courageous missionaries have set foot in the Philippines, South Korea, Brunei, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Laos, Malawi, Swaziland, Mozambique, Rwanda, the Congo, Burundi, Mali, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, and Gabon. They have spoken to hundreds of religious, seminarians and lay people to spread the truth of the Gospel of Life and have even seen conversions. HLI is excited to see the amazing work the Holy Spirit has yet to accomplish through these bold pro-life activists.
  2. St. Michael Prayer Campaign for Conversion of Abortionists ? HLI has re-launched its prayer campaign to St. Michael the Archangel for the intention of the conversion of abortionists. HLI is encouraging pro-life people all over the world to pray the Prayer to St. Michael personally and especially after Mass. HLI is collecting signatures on a pledge to encourage priests and bishops to lead their faithful in praying this powerful prayer. HLI has distributed over half a million prayer cards and hopes to distribute many more to supporters in the US, as well as missionaries and those they come in contact with abroad. Read more about this campaign, sign the pledge, and order prayer cards here: http://www.hli.org/st_michael_prayer.html/
  3. Mission to Seminarians ? HLI's 2008 Seminarian Institute reached 120 seminarians from 11 French-speaking countries, up from 88 participants from 9 countries in 2007. The 2009 Seminarian Institute will take place in Togo, and it looks to be even more expansive, as HLI's presence reaches more and more African countries all the time. In addition to expanded circulation of the bi-annual Seminarians for Life International Newsletter, HLI is spreading information to seminarians digitally through the SFLI website (www.semsforlife.org) and a new SFLI blog. SFLI plans to reach out to seminaries in the United States along with those in other countries around the world. Fr. Bill Bellrose joined HLI in September to focus on HLI's Seminarians for Life International program.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 2008

Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
