MISSION AND PROGRAMS
Mission
Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of communities. The mission of the organization is to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health care professionals and the public and advocates for increased funding for diabetes research and for the rights of people with diabetes.
Programs
The Research Program of the American Diabetes Association is funded through its Reseach Foundation (see American Diabetes Association Reseach Foundation). Information for people with diabetes and the people who care for them is available via www.diabetes.org, 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383), and publications (books, journals, magazines, brochures, videos, etc.) Community-based diversity programs address the disproportionately high incidence of diabetes among African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics/Latinos. Programs for children with diabetes and their families include more than 80 camps and a new education program. Public awareness activities include media campaigns throughout the year on topics including the seriousness of diabetes, diabetes prevention, and diabetes treatment. The Association sets clinical practice guidelines for diabetes care and organizes the largest scientific meeting on diabetes in the world with more than 14,000 attendees expected in 2002. Advocacy efforts include urging Congress and NIH to increase funding for diabetes research and fighting to end discrimination against people with diabetes.
Additional Comments from the Organization
The American Diabetes Association is built upon the contributions that millions of Americans make every year. Signature fund-raising events include America's Walk for Diabetes, School Walk for Diabetes and Tour de Cure. ADA also solicits contributions through the mail and through the wills, trusts and estate plans of individuals.
GOALS AND RESULTS
Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2004
- Diabetes research funding increased to $36.5 million, a 33% increase over the $27.4 million in 2001.
- Call Center helped 325,000 people by phone or e-mail; web site, diabetes.org, recorded 47 million page views and 6 million visits.
- The Association's list of diabetes advocates grew to a more than 175,000 individuals and families interested in finding a cure and ending discrimination against people with diabetes. Thanks in part to these individuals and ADA volunteers and staff, there is now legislation in 46 states and the District of Columbia that requires insurance coverage for diabetes supplies, equipment and education. More than five million Americans with diabetes get their insurance coverage from these types of state run of programs. Also, ADA's advocacy effots have helped increase federal funding of diabetes research at the National Institutes of Health to $694 million in FY 01 -- more than doubling the amount of $320 million in FY 97.
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2004
- Continue a major public education effort aimed at increasing awareness about the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
- Increase research grants to fund the most promising opportunities for a cure and improving the lives of people with diabetes.
- Work to end discrimination against children with diabetes in the schools.
Self Assessment
Volunteers lead the Association's strategic planning process, set annual targets, and monitor progress against measurable objectives.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2007
Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
