MISSION AND PROGRAMS

Mission

Academic life at Penn is centered in its 12 schools - the Annenberg School for Communication, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Dental Medicine, the Graduate School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Design, the Law School, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Wharton School. Four of these schools offer undergraduate programs and all of them offer opportunities for graduate study. Research at the University of Pennsylvania is also characterized by its unique multi-disciplinary focus. All 12 schools of the University are located on the West Philadelphia campus. The physical proximity of these schools encourages and facilitates a cooperative, cross-boundary approach to research. The University has a record of service to and engagement with the Philadelphia community that matches its record of academic excellence. Penn faculty and students produced a comprehensive plan for Philadelphia?s Delaware River waterfront. The faculty and student design clinic, Penn Praxis, presented city officials in November with a vision that calls for creating a livable and pedestrian-friendly community in the area surrounding Center City?s water front. Penn also spearheaded a yearlong effort to boost civic engagement in Philadelphia. The Penn Project for Civic Engagement facilitated a ?citizens? convention? in December that produced an agenda for turning Philadelphia into ?the next great city? to be presented to the mayor and city council The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), the flagship of the University of Pennsylvania Health System''s three hospitals, was established in 1874 as a teaching hospital to complement the medical education received by students at the University of Pennsylvania medical school. It has 18 clinical departments and provides training in more than 40 clinical specialties. Major areas of investigation include heart disease, cancer, and diseases of aging including Alzheimer''s disease, women''s health, diabetes and obesity.

Programs

The University also sees itself as having a public service mission. The University is home to the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Institute for Contemporary Art and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, all of which contribute vitally to enriching the cultural life of Philadelphia. In addition, the University is an active participant in the West Philadelphia neighborhood that is its home. One measure of the excellence of the research and academic studies conducted at Penn is the awards conferred on Penn faculty. The faculty includes 65 members of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, 55 members of the Institute of Medicine, 33 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 26 members of the American Philosophical Society, 112 recipients of Guggenheim Fellowships, nine members of the National Academy of Engineering, seven recipients of the MacArthur Award, six National Medal of Science recipients, five recipients of the Nobel Prize, and five Pulitzer Prize winners. Research at the University of Pennsylvania is also characterized by its unique multi-disciplinary focus. All 12 schools of the University are located on the West Philadelphia campus. The physical proximity of these schools encourages and facilitates a cooperative, cross-boundary approach to research. An example is the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science, which brings together investigators from the disciplines of Linguistics, Mathematical Logic, Philosophy, Psychology, Computer Science, and Neuroscience. UPHS maintains records to identify and monitor the level of charity care they provide. These records include the amount of payment forgone, based on established rates, for services and supplies furnished under its charity care policy. During the year ended June 30, 2006, UPHS provided approximately $168,480,000 in uncompensated care, comprised of charity care and the provision for bad debts. Additionally, the costs of providing services to eligible welfare recipients, who participate in the Pennsylvania Medical Assistance and local Managed Medicaid programs exceeded reimbursement by $52,141,000 and $61,375,000 in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2007

Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2008

  1. Strengthening the undergraduate financial aid program has increased access for the most talented students regardless of their socioeconomic background. In 2007 Penn boosted by 62% the number of undergraduates able to replace loans with grants by raising the family income level cap for loan elimination from $50,000 to $60,000. Starting September 2008, students with calculated family incomes of less than $100,000 will receive loan-free aid packages, while families above that level will receive a 10 percent reduction in need-based loans. By September 2009, all undergraduate students eligible for financial aid ? currently 40% of the undergraduate enrollment ? will receive loan-free aid packages.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2008

Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
