MISSION AND PROGRAMS

Mission

The National Museum of Wildlife Art (NMWA) is a fine art museum located at the southern gateway of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The museum offers a provocative perspective on art history with distinctive collections and programs that are uniquely suited to its location. NMWA collects and exhibits painting, sculpture and works on paper from North American and European cultures that explore the relationship between humankind and wildlife. Unique in their focus, the collections are unsurpassed in the United States and contain more than 3,000 works of art, dating as early as 1496, but emphasizing American 19th and 20th century art.

Programs

NMWA's programs include traveling exhibitions that include Native American and western historical material. A wide array of multidisciplinary programs are offered throughout the year for children and adults including comprehensive programs for K-12 school groups, family programs, lectures, docent tours, workshops, films, performances and a self-directed activity center for children ages 3-10.

Additional Comments from the Organization

NMWA has received national recognition and press for its programs, facility and exhibitions. The Curator of Education received the 1996 "Wyoming Friend of the Arts" award from the governor in recognition of her contribution to arts education. The museum was presented the 1994 Wyoming Humanities Award for excellence in educational programming. Media coverage since 1994 has included features on Good Morning America, ESPN Outdoors and CBS Sunday Morning. Upon completion of the permanent facility in 1994, the American Institute of Architects honored the museum with five awards, including its prestigious Award of Distinction, and Builder Magazine's Gold Nugget Award. The museum received the 2001 Governor's Art Award recognizing our cultural contribution to Wyoming.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending April 30, 2007

  1. Acquired a Georgia O'Keeffe painting for the permanent collection.
  2. Loaned a major traveling exhibition, Wild At Heart, to the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh, PA. The exhibit will also travel to the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY, and the Vero Beach Museum in Florida.
  3. Received a three star rating from Charity Navigator for sound financial management.

Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning May 1, 2008

  1. Build a strong museum: Strengthen museum infrastructure to meet best practices for art museums as defined by professional sources (e.g., AAM), to encourage short-term growth, and to insure long-term stability.
  2. Raise the museum's visibility: Achieve national and international recognition for the museum's collections and programs, setting specific annual targets for growth and enhancements (e.g., acquisitions, niche audiences, grant awards, collaborations).
  3. Focus the museum's impact on public understanding: Nurture the NMWA as the premier authority and center in the world for the understanding and appreciation of wildlife art (through research, library resources, educational programming, exhibitions, Internet and media-based resources, and scholarly publications.)

Self Assessment

NMWA evaluates its effectiveness through weekly senior staff meeting, monthly Board Executive Committee meetings and quarterly Full Board meetings. A number of factors are examined including visitation and program statistics, financial figures, etc.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending April 30, 2008

Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
