Mission and Programs

Mission

NPT was founded in 1983 specifically to protect national park lands. While NPT maintains a close relationship with the National Park Service (NPS), NPT is an independent private nonprofit 501(c)(3) land conservancy, the only one in America dedicated exclusively to preserving and protecting America''s parkland. Our mission is to assist the NPS and others to: 1) Secure privately-held property in, adjacent to, or in the immediate vicinity of national park units; 2) Acquire land to create new national park areas; 3) Assist in the preservation of all areas of "National Significance."

Programs

This program fulfills NPT’s goal of bringing underserved, at-risk children to our parks to cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards.  Our partners include:

For Love of Children (FLOC). NPT is working to broaden environmental education programs and increase educational materials and scholarships that will enhance FLOC’s Outdoor Education Center (OEC)’s capacity for environmental education. The OEC will also increase the number of environmental education programs offered offsite at various schools throughout the region serving children in Washington DC and the metro area.

The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC). Headquartered in Alexandria VA,

NHEC seeks to educate, empower, and engage the Latino community on environmental and sustainable development issues and encourage Latinos to actively work to preserve and protect our environment and assist Latinos to pursue the many career, educational, and policy opportunities in the environment and natural resources field. As part of its mission, NHEC conducts an environmental leadership training for youth. NPT is working to secure critical funding for the NHEC since their grant from the National Park Service was cut due to federal funding limitations.

Additional Comments from the Organization

NPT is the only private citizen group recognized and authorized by federal legislation to own and manage a unit of the National Park System, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2008

Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
