Mission and Programs

Mission

The mission of the Friends of Morningside Park which, was founded in 1981, is to mobilize neighborhood residents, institutions and resources for the improvement of our park and the protection of its natural habitats; to promote community events and activities that bring the surrounding neighborhoods together; and to advocate on behalf of Morningside Park.

Programs

We organize and sponsor events in Morningside Park throughout the year including: Kids Easter Egg Hunt, Earth Day Celebration, Summer Concert Series, Double Dutch Jump Rope Tournament, Halloween Festival, December Holiday Celebration and a Farmers' Market. In additions, we hold park clean ups and planting events. We have worked with Project for Public Spaces, Inc to develop a revitalization plan of the park, the product of nearly 300 user surveys, four full days of observations in the park, stakeholder interviews, and a series of community presentations that allowed for feedback and suggestions.

Additional Comments from the Organization

We are starting major new initiatives to bring new members and donors to our park. Our first fundraising event was an unqualified success and we are beginning a concerted effort to reach out to local developers and homeowners whose properties are adjacent to and benefit from the park.

Who We Are

A volunteer community-based coalition of residents and institutions dedicated to preserving and improving, one of Manhattan's most important historic parks.
