Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Much of Leavenworth County has no servicing municipal pet animal shelter and few if any animal control services. Current operations are focused on caring for homeless pets NOW, reuniting them with owners or adopting them to great new homes. Leavenworth County Humane Society, Inc. is the ONLY organization working to build and operate a 21st century no-kill pet animal shelter to serve all Leavenworth County residents.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Pet Sheltering, Foster & Adoption
Until we can build the pet animal shelter that our county's citizens want, need and deserve, we operate from a transformed plant nursery, with space for 14 dogs and 30 cats. We are a no-kill shelter, meaning that the only time we will end a pet's life is when they are irretrievably ill or injured and suffering, or if they present a clear danger to public safety.
Pet Owner Assistance
Help pet owners retain their pets by providing subsidized veterinary care, food, shelter, training assistance, etc.
Assistance to USP Leavenworth
Provides ongoing veterinary care for feral cats at the US Penitentiary, Leavenworth. Includes our partnership with the USP Camp to train inmates to become dog trainers and train dogs to achieve Canine Good Citizen status.
Humane Education
Targeted programs for schools, service and civic organizations, 4-H, Scouts, etc. teach pet responsibility and proper pet care and inform the public about LCHS, Inc. programs and services and the need for them.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Leavenworth County Humane Society, Inc. is the ONLY organization working to build and operate a 21st century no-kill pet animal shelter to serve all Leavenworth County residents. We intend to eliminate pet abandonment by providing a humane and legal alternative. We aim to assist owners to keep their loved pets. We will know we are successful when every pet in Leavenworth County is treated humanely, and has a loving home.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Continuing to serve now, and building for the future.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
In 2019, we purchased property and a building, transforming it into a functional animal shelter. It is not large enough or modern enough to meet our county's needs for the next 30 years, but it is far better than solely operating from foster homes. We have secured contracts with government agencies throughout our county to shelter found and unwanted pets.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We've helped thousands of animals and owners. We've done dozens of presentations to schools and community groups. We purchased property and a building and transformed it into a functional animal shelter and community resource. In 2022, we cared for 268 dogs and cats, maintaining a 94% live outcome rate.
