Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Clinic & Outreach Program
Through direct implementation and partners, PCAF is currently operating at 18 clinics across Uganda, Kenya, Cambodia and, starting in 2016, Burundi. In its early years, PCAF operated clinics at district and regional hospitals, treating those impacted by armed conflict. PCAF’s focus on conflict-affected populations has not changed; the model, however, evolved quickly to provide the vast majority of care within communities.
Maternal Mental Health
PCAF launched an innovation project to strengthen mental health of young mothers to improve development childhood development outcomes in the first 1,000 days.
Self Help +
This project is aimed at adapting an existing intervention, a WHO guided self-help protocol, for South Sudanese refugees who have experienced conflict-related sexual violence.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
PCAF is a small organization with a bold vision, to implement and scale transformative mental health and psychosocial care. Our programs are grounded in rigorous research and evidence. They are based on the principle that the best innovations come from local communities. That is why our programs are delivered by local clinicians and caregivers and operate through partnership with governments, with the goal of community-based lay practitioners providing majority of care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
IMPLEMENTATION:
PCAF is an implementing agency collaborating with international agencies, academic institutions and governments.
POPULATION:
Our core expertise is helping to heal those impacted by war, organized violence and armed conflict.
TREATMENT:
Conflict survivors rarely have one disorder, such as depression, able to be addressed by a single treatment. Our approach treats the range of mental health disorders and causes, consistent with WHO guidelines and international best practices.
SUSTAINABILITY:
We partner with governments to ensure long-term sustainability, including their financial or in-kind contribution in programming.
OUTCOMES:
We reduce symptoms of mental disorders, return patients to well being, and address & prevent underlying causes.
MEASUREMENT:
We measure results and outcomes, using data to communicate results, improve programming and learn from mistakes.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
PCAF is led by a strong management team with significant non-profit experience based in New York, with the majority of its staff working overseas. PCAF draws on the skills and expertise of its board of directors as well as its eleven member international advisory board, which includes experts in the fields of global mental health, psychiatry, and human rights. The organization is also supported by a committed group of funders.
PCAF's partnerships with government provide support for its mission, as do partnerships with other NGOs. PCAF has also fostered strong relationships with experts from the academic community and has conducted pioneering research in order to make effective data-driven decisions.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
More than 100,000 survivors of conflict and and violence have been treated by PCAF-trained personnel or at PCAF clinics. PCAF is is building strategic partnerships with larger NGOs with existing cadres of health workers to build mental health screening, treatment and referral capacity. It is developing links to community services to connect PCAF's patients to opportunities to pursue productive lives, including access to education, skills training and economic empowerment. PCAF also aims to develop targeted initiatives to treat vulnerable populations, including women and children, former child soldiers, and people living with HIV/AIDs.
