What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity builds new homes and renovates or repairs older homes in partnership with families in need and community volunteers. Each family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity, time spent hard at work building or repairing their own homes or a future neighbors home. Volunteers labor and in kind donations of building materials and services ensure the low cost and affordability. At completion, Habitat sells the home at cost (or finances the cost of the repair) with a 0% interest mortgage to qualified low-income families. Donations from the community, proceeds from Habitat ReStore (retail building supply store) and recycled mortgages fund the cost of operations, supplies, and equipment.
To be eligible, families must complete an application during an open application period. They must demonstrate financial and housing need, willingness to partner with Habitat, and capacity to repay the no-interest loan over time. Habitat prepares partner families for the benefits and responsibilities of home-ownership by providing volunteer mentors and training on budgeting, mortgage and settlement, home maintenance, winterization, and simple repairs.
Affordable Homeownership
Homeownership - Construction of new energy efficient homes in conjunction with community volunteers. Future homebuyers are required to complete 500 hours of sweat equity and training including homeownership counseling, budgeting, and home maintenance.
Repairs and Neighborhood Revitalization
Habitat conducts home repairs for low to moderate income homeowners needing assistance to remain safely and affordably in their own homes. A partner in the county's long term Disaster Recovery Committee, Habitat repaired homes for flood survivors in 2012 and assists in disaster recovery efforts in affected areas of the country including the Gulf and the east coast.
In 2013, Habitat will collaborate with the Ephrata Project and LOVE Inc to complete home repairs in northern Lancaster County and the Ephrata area.
Habitat ReStore
Habitat ReStore is a social enterprise specializing in the recycling and resale of donated new and gently used building materials and supplies to the public. The purpose of ReStore is:
Provide additional funding to support affiliates' house-building goals.
Expand opportunities to serve a broader base of the low-income community by providing low-cost materials.
Provide good stewardship of sustainable resources in the community.
