Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Prepare students with little or no access to academic based preschool or transitional kindergarten for kindergarten and later academic success. Students learn language arts, math and social skills and by the end of the program are on par with or exceeding their peers who did have preschool.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Ready to Start
Ready To Start is a five-week program that uses a structured Ready to Start Curriculum, coaching, certificated credentialed teachers, professional development, and parent involvement. R2S currently targets 900 children in five school districts for kindergarten during 20 (four days per week) or 25 days of instruction (five days per week). Districts have the option of running four or five days per week; however the length of instructional time is the same. Ready to Start has nine years of data and demonstrated results in preparing children for the rigors of kindergarten. By testing pre and post scores, and following children through third grade, data shows that Ready to Start effectively prepares students, and R2S students continue to perform as well as or better than their peers even as they enter later grades.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To ensure that students with no or little preschool experience enter kindergarten ready to learn, and retain those skills throughout their academic career. Skills learned include math, language arts and social skills.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
R2S operates a 5 week summer program the summer before children enter kindergarten. R2S uses a copyrighted curriculum that teaches math, language arts and social skills in classes of no more than 15 students. A credentialed teacher and teachers aide are present in the classroom, and an academic coach ensures the teachers remain on track. Students are also screened for health (vision, hearing) and dental issues. A robust parent component is also part of R2S.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
R2S has operated for 15 years with excellent success. Credentialed teachers and coaches ensure the integrity of the program.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The R2S program has proven success. Our only obstacle in expanding services is funding. In 2014 we were able to expand to North Kern through a partnership with Roll Global / Paramount Farming.
