What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Sheltering Oak Sanctuary
Our sanctuary program provides a safe haven for dogs in need of special care or rehabilitation before they can be successfully adopted, and a permanent home for horses, pigs and other rescued farm animals.
Bright Beginnings
This program is aimed at reducing the influx of young adult "pit bull" type dogs into public shelters. We target back yard bred, at risk puppies and their parents and provide training, socialization, spay/neuter and basic health care. We place our Bright Beginnings puppies in permanent adoptive homes once they graduate the program.
Take Me Home Project
This program seeks to match shelter dogs with homes in areas that have a higher demand for large, mixed breed dogs. We provide adoption counseling and screening as well as transport the dogs to their new homes. We conduct follow up checks and take the dogs back if they are not successful in their home.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aiming to reduce the number of animals that enter our local shelters through early intervention and education, and to increase the the live release rate of animals already in our local shelters.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have a multi-pronged approach to accomplish our goals.
Reducing intake: In our local community and across the country, shelters have a disproportionate number of dogs labelled as "pit bull" type dogs. Those dogs tend to have a harder time being adopted. We aim to address this problem where it begins - in back yards around our community. We identify back yard breeders and take in litters of "pit bull" puppies for complete medical care, training, socialization and spay/neuter. Those puppies are then adopted out as ambassadors to carefully screened, permanent homes. By contract, all of our puppies must return to us if their family can no longer care for them - meaning none of these puppies will ever see the inside of a public shelter. In the first 2 years of our program, our return rate has been 4%, meaning 96% of our puppies are still in their homes. This greatly exceeds the national average for puppies remaining in their homes. There is a direct impact of reducing shelter intake as well as a secondary impact of expanding the pool of adopters by making well trained puppies available. Our Bright Beginnings adopters have already succeeded in attracting "new to the breed" adopters, as well as adopting a 2nd dog or puppy that is a "pit bull" type.
Increasing Live Release: Through direct rescue we are helping to get more dogs out of shelters. The dogs we rescue either go straight into foster or adoptive homes via our Take Me Home project or they get the help and time they need by coming to the Sheltering Oak Sanctuary. Both of these programs provide an immediate relief as well as ongoing outreach and education in the community to help build a more compassionate and responsible model of animal stewardship.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through our three core programs, we are able to help roughly 200 dogs each year and dozens of families. We are able to secure the funding and volunteer help to administer each of our programs successfully and Co-Founder Jill Anderson serves as a volunteer Executive Director.
As the organization we grows, we believe that we could achieve even more with the addition of a couple of key staff positions.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished our mission to help the most vulnerable shelter dogs. We believe that we have also played a role in helping our local shelter reach "no kill" status recently. We have not yet accomplished helping all of our 3 local shelters reach no kill status, which we would like to do. We would also like to package programs like Bright Beginnings and Take Me Home for other nonprofit animal rescues to help the most vulnerable and highest risk dogs in their communities.
