Ground Truth Newsletter
Ground Truth is the publication of the Diablo Trust, mailed free-of-charge to everyone on our mailing list. Ground Truth, serves as an excellent education and outreach tool that provides an outlet to share knowledge about natural resource issues in NAZ with a special focus on holistic land management, open space conservation and preservation of working lands. Our newsletter is sent to over 700 mailboxes (over half in Flagstaff area), 900 emails and is posted on our social media and website.
Recreation Working Group
Over the past several summers and especially in 2020, there has been a sharp increase in all types of recreation across Northern Arizona, including within the Diablo Trust Land Area. The impacts from this increased recreation on our public lands are substantial and concerning. Safety issues, habitat destruction, vandalism, road damage and maintenance issues, trash and noise are a few of the issues we are seeing in our forests and open lands.
Diablo Trust has a successful history of bringing together diverse groups to find innovative solutions for contentious issues. We are keenly aware of the increasing recreation impacts and eager to find collaborative solutions. Diablo Trust is spearheading a collaborative Recreation Working Group to find common solutions for all stakeholders. Diablo Trust envisions the Recreation Working Group as an inclusive network represented by all who have a stake in keeping our forests and open lands working and wild.
Integrated Monitoring for Sustainability (IMfoS)
Since 1987 researchers at Northern Arizona University under the direction of Dr. Tom Sisk have been conducting an experiment studying the effects of livestock on grassland ecosystems. The researchers collaborate with ranchers in moving cattle among replicated 2.5-acre study plots.
Results from this effort are providing important insight into the complex effects of grazing, and climate change. Integrated Monitoring for Sustainability (IMfoS) emerged from a collaborative process among Diablo Trust, agencies, and Northern Arizona University and Prescott College.
Using an integrated monitoring framework, the Holistic Ecosystem Health Indicator (HEHI), this project assesses and monitors the sustainability of the Diablo Trust ranches.
Objectives include:
~development of cost-effective sampling protocols for the ecological and social indicators
~transferring knowledge through hands-on monitoring and training workshops
~field testing of HEHI as a monitoring tool for Community-based Collaboratives
The implementation of HEHI combines data from existing monitoring efforts and enhances the Diablo Trust’s adaptive management through improved transparency, stakeholder facilitation, and increased learning.
Forage Resource Study Group (FRSG)
The Forage Research Study Group (FRSG) is the longest consistent utilization monitoring program in Arizona, FRSG brings together the US Forest Service, Arizona State Land Department, Arizona Game and Fish Department, and Diablo Trust ranches to monitor plots that were designed in the 1940s. The Group uses rain gauges, utilization cages, geospatial analysis, photo plots, condition and trend transects, and wildlife censuses.
Collaborative Resource Operation Plan (CROP)
The Collaborative Resource Operation Plan (CROP) is essential to maintaining productive working relationships especially in an environment as diverse, contentious and important to so many stakeholders as our own.
The CROP database documents the history of current and completed projects on the Diablo Trust land area. With the help of the Flying M and Bar T Bar ranches, United States Forest Service, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Arizona State Lands Department, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and ForestEra we have documented and mapped over 80 land projects.
Our projects are divided into the following categories: brush management, burns, waters, fencing, and facilities.
