What we aim to solve
The geographic area that will be served is the 48197, 48198 zipcode (Ypsilanti, MI) located in Washtenaw County. Through viewing census data, the home ownership rate is 32.4%. Only 36% of persons age 25 or older hold a bachelors degree or higher as of the 2010-2014 census. The crime index is rated at a 6 out of 100 (neighborhood scout). For the 2015 cohort (4-year track) the graduation rate was 66% with there being a 14% dropout rate (MI School Data). The rate of high school graduates attending a post-secondary institution within the first year is less than 35%. Less than 5% of students are deemed college ready based on ACT prep scores. Only 14% of students grades 3-8 are proficient in Math and English Language Arts.

Future Leaders Program
This is a personal intervention program serving at-risk youth grades 2-6 focusing on leadership, social skill and character development, and health & fitness. Educational lessons take place bi-weekly and are supplemented with educational fieldtrips focused on arts/cultural awareness, academic-service learning projects, and family-oriented events.
B.O.S.S.
This is a career development program for high school students providing basic workforce training, financial literacy, entrepreneurship training. The lessons are supplemented by internship/job opportunities, job shadowing, college tours, and company visits/presentations.
Academic Tutoring
Mentor2Youth provides an academic intervention program for students grades 6-12 focused on core academic skill building, comprehension development, college awareness, and math & science workshops.
Real Men Talk
An intervention program focused on preparing teenage males for life after high school
Youth L.E.A.D.
A program providing opportunities for teens to conduct service projects, host events and mentor/tutor their fellow peers.
Summer Leadership Academy
A program offering focused on training young people the characteristic of leadership and how to become peer mentors.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Increase comprehension in reading and math by at least 1-2 grade levels

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Through marketing/promotion, student retention, and increased revenue streams, Mentor2Youth will be able to increase enrollment within its multiple programs providing access for more students to participate in weekly programming. Through our academic intervention programs facilitated by college students majoring in education and retired teaching personnel, our staff is able to provide a comprehensive service for students struggling academically. This allows students to develop their comprehension enabling them to become independent learners in all core subject matter. Through its intervention programs, specially college/career readiness programs, Mentor2Youth is able to assist high school-age youth with staying on track to graduate and attend a post-secondary institution. It also, through workforce training, provides students with the necessary skills to apply to job and internship opportunities related to their aspiring career fields.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Mentor2Youth has a wealth of knowledge through its board members, many with backgrounds in elementary and secondary education, business, higher learning, Mentor2Youth is able to apply practical methods for advancing student achievement personally, academically and professionally. Through a diverse group of community partnerships in the non-profit sector, universities, businesses, faith-based organizations, and educational coalitions and alliances, Mentor2Youth provides a bevy of resources to students to achieve expected goals and outcomes.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 2011, M2Y has served more than 500 youth across Washtenaw County ages 6-18. From that time, we have had the opportunity to:
- Prepare 30+ teens for finding and gaining employment
- Guide at least 80% of our youth towards graduating in a 4 year period
- Develop more than 85% of our youth to display emotional and behavioral growth
Our next steps is raising $100,000 during the 2018-2019 school year to serve 125 youth.
