STARS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Since our start in 2002, Stars Scholarship Fund has reviewed over 50,000 applications from students in our community seeking assistance to complete their education. We review each application one by one each year and we see students from diverse backgrounds; each individual with dreams and goals of their own. While each story is different, what is common across all applicants is a great need to help complete their education. The U.S. Department of Higher Education has aptly pointed out that “higher education is no longer a luxury for the privileged few, but a necessity for individual economic opportunity and America’s competitiveness in the global economy.” A college education remains the best investment a student can make in his or her future.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Stars Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization committed to promoting access to and success in higher education for all students in our community through scholarship. Based in McAllen, Texas, Stars offers scholarships to students from south and west Texas who are dedicated to completing a degree at an accredited college or university.
Stars Scholarship Fund envisions a community where all people have the opportunity to reach their full potential by participating and succeeding in higher education. The Stars Scholarship Fund sees higher education as a catalyst for positive change, a force that can transform the lives of individuals and families and advance the economic and civic health of societies.
A community that truly recognizes the importance of higher education is one that ensures the doors to post-secondary opportunity are open to all who have the potential to succeed, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, background or lack of resources.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. Stars Scholarship Fund has the support of hundreds of local and national businesses, organizations and individuals annually.
2. Stars Scholarship Fund raises funds consistently throughout the year via four Extravaganza events, grant requests, Employee Giving programs and community partnerships.
3. Stars Scholarship Fund commits 100% of every dollar donated by sponsors (annual Extravaganzas) and by community donors to scholarships for the students of south and west Texas to attend the college of their choice.
4. In order to fully maximize our funds, Stars Scholarship Fund has established partnerships with Texas colleges and universities via Matching Funds Programs.
5. Stars Scholarship Fund sets aside funds to award scholarships via a General Fund Program, which offers students who do not attend one of our partner schools the opportunity to attend the school of their choice.
6. Stars Scholarship Fund criteria is such that our recipients represent academically talented and highly motivated students from our community.
7. Stars Scholarship Fund reviews and scores each applicant based on quantitative data obtained from the student's application records.
8. Stars Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to students of every level of higher education and field of study who are committed to degree completion. We award students from our community of any gender, any ethnicity, any age, any religion and any background.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
1. Operating expenses of Stars Scholarship Fund are underwritten by L&F Distributors and Anheuser-Busch allowing 100% of all donations and grant funding to be applied to scholarships.
2. Stars Scholarship Fund has established partnerships with 21 area colleges and universities via our Matching Funds Program. In this program, select schools agree to match a contribution from Stars to students from that particular school. Schools under the matching program represent Texas colleges and universities that service the students from our community.
3. Stars Scholarship Fund sets aside funds to award students through a General Program, where students who are not attending a matching school have the opportunity to receive a scholarship to the school of their choice.
4. Stars Scholarship Fund has as extensive marketing plan, with in-kind partnerships with media outlets in each market served and assistance by each matching college/university to reach eligible applicants and encourage them to apply for our scholarship opportunity.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
1. Stars Scholarship Funds is able to provide 100% of funds raised to student scholarships.
2. Stars Scholarship Fund has 90% of funds matched by an institution of higher learning and has increased the number of partnerships each year.
3. Stars Scholarship Fund increases awareness for the scholarship program each year, this is reflected by the increase of applicants.
4. Stars Scholarship Fund has expanded from 22 counties served in south Texas at inception to an additional 9 counties served in west Texas to date.
5. Stars Scholarship Fund has developed a database that can assist in management of applicant files and information to assist us in better tracking progress and history of the organization.
1. Stars Scholarship Fund has further partnerships to explore with institutions of higher learning who serve students from our community.
2. Stars Scholarship Fund has yet to find substantial grant opportunities that are in line with our program.
3. Stars Scholarship Fund must further increase new sponsorship/donor funds.
4. Stars Scholarship Fund has not retained 100% of donors each year. We retain approximately 79% of donors.
5. Stars Scholarship Fund must find additional avenues to raise funds, in additional to the existing events and programs.
