Trash Transformed. Lives Changed
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
XSEducation
XSEducation offers and funds a complete K-12 education for more than 150 children living in Jakarta's trash picker communities. Funding includes uniforms, school supplies, books, shoes, medical, dental and vision care, required vaccinations and school transportation. After grade 12, some students want to further their education by attending a Technical (Junior) College which is paid for through the XSEducation program.
XSCommunity
The Cirendeu open dump in Jakarta is home to more than 100 trashpicker families.
Unlike other trash pickers who live away from the garbage dump and go daily to pick trash, these families build heir homes on top of the trash.
The toxic methane released from the rotting trash is in the air they breathe. The air is filled with smoke from the burning heaps of garbage. These families live at the lowest end of the poverty chain.
The health problems caused by living in this environment are enormous. XSProject has partnered with a local Hospital to pay for the medical attention that is constantly required. Vision care and tetanus vaccinations are now routine expenses. XSProject is aware that some in the community have life threatening illnesses that also require urgent and long term care. A nurse regularly gives health and nutrition talks at Cirendeu to educate the community on what they can do for themselves to stay safe.
Children's Reading Program
After school, students in grades 2-6 go to the Community Center at the Cirendeu dump. They do their homework, assisted by our college students. When homework is completed, the students may choose a book from the Community Library to read.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
XSProject's Mission is threefold:
To break the generational cycle of trash picking in Jakarta, Indonesia by guaranteeing a K-12 education to every trash picker's children.
To improve the quality of life of trash pickers and their families by providing medical, dental, and vision treatment to both adults and children and offering vocational training for young men, women and mothers living at the garbage dumps.
By purchasing non-biodegradable trash from trash pickers, we provide extra income for trash picker families. From that trash, XSProject creates unique and colorful products which are sold worldwide to bring awareness of the effects of trash on poverty and the environment
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
XSProject is well established and trusted in the trash picker community. We must address all aspects of a trash picker's life in order to stop the generational cycle of trash picking. Their fragile existence requires comprehensive programs and daily visits to the community.
Nutrition, diet and hygiene are directly linked to health.
Education of the young leads to better jobs, more money and the ability to move away from the garbage dump.
Sales of products gives XSProject the platform to educate businesses and consumers about how waste can be reduced and recycled.
Every aspect of XSProject's work focuses on our mission to improve the lives of trash picker families and our vision to encourage local government to adopt solid waste and recycling programs in Jakarta that would give fair wage employment to trash pickers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Programs administered by XSProject are funded by private and corporate donations, grants and sales of XSProject products.
Additional help comes from international schools in Jakarta and Singapore, Rotary Club International and our large base of dedicated volunteers around the globe. Our clinic and hospital partners offer vaccinations, medical, dental, vision and hearing testing at reduced prices to both adults and children in the trash picker community. Our network of women volunteers support the vocational training programs with sewing machines, computers, and sales of handcrafts made by the mothers.
XSProject's 13 employees, wash and sew the trash collected buy the trash pickers into colorful and unique products that are sold around the world. In addition to Indonesia, XSProject has sales representation in Australia, Singapore, The Netherlands, UK, US and Canada.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
A. HAVE ACCOMPLISHED : With support from XSProject and other similar organizations, Indonesians are beginning to create "trash banks" where they bring their own recyclables and get credit in a passbook. When the credits are large enough, they can get cash to help their families. XSProject is involved in and encouraging the creation of local "trash banks".
HAVE NOT ACCOMPLISHED: There is only so much XSProject can do for the trash pickers in Jakarta as long as the families are living on top of the heaps of trash at the garbage dump. We have not been successful at getting "the ear" of the Indonesian government to create solid waste and recycling practices (Materials Recovery Facilities) where the trash pickers can work in safe and cleaner environments. Living in homes built on top of piles of garbage is not a safe or healthy environment and we home to raise funds to move the community but only when other work can be cound for trash pickers.
B. HAVE ACCOMPLISHED: In 2016 XSProject built a Community Centerat the garbage dump. This center houses the kindergarten classroom, a library and the workshop, showroom for Cirendeu Handicrafts, the micro-financed program for trash picker women. Each year 3 houses are repaired or rebuilt for those with the greatest need. This means the houses no longer flood or have roofs that leak when the monsoon season arrives. XSProject will continue to build better houses until such time that the community can be moved.
HAVE NOT ACCOMPLISHED: If there were jobs for the trash pickers, XSProject could move all the families into better housing away from the burning trash and polluted environment.
C. HAVE ACCOMPLISHED: We remained concerned about both child and adult health. Each adult trash picker has an ID card that they present at theclinic if they are ill. The bill, at a reduced rate, is sent to XSProject for payment. This same hospital also offers contraceptive solutions and infant check-ups at no charge to the community. in 2016, XSProject's medical expenses for the trash picker adults and children was $10,800.
HAVE NOT ACCOMPLISHED: Some of the people living at the trash community have life threatening illnesses or are already too ill for XSProject to help due to lack of funds.
