Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
1. Respect, Protect , Preserve Manitou Cave and property
Cleaned, repaired, maintained, 10 acres property, the restored building, gravel path, nine steel & wood bridges & hundreds of concrete steps. Restored historic mid-century modern Visitor Center which serves as Education & Gathering Center and 10 acres surrounding property. Constructed bat-friendly steel cave gate to public intruders, protect cave and its cultural & historic record and fragile ecosystem, pure water and threatened Manitou Cave Snail. Installed street gates & posted signage posted for risk-management, to protect the cave, land & water, and to protect trespassing public and prevent dumping and environmental damage. Cleared invasive species of flora-kudzu, privet, mimosa. Maintained National Wildlife Habitat and non-toxic management of site. Researched, documented & published significant dated, signed & translated Cherokee syllabary inscriptions on cave walls by all 3 bands of Federally recognized bands of Cherokee scholars. Researched and documented flora on land and cave life. Researched & documented water dye trace study by USGS. Began preliminary research of Geology & Archaeology.
2. Conservation of Resources
We maintain a gravel path to cave to prevent erosion. We have a bat house and initiated "Pulling for Bats" program to save trees & native plants by removing invasive kudzu, mimosa, & privet. We are a certified National Wildlife Habitat by the NWF. On behalf of the wetland pond beavers, migratory birds, aquatic life, reptiles, subterranean and land flora & fauna s ecosystem that includes bats, salamanders, & rare cave snails, we are networking & partnering with other conservation efforts including organizations such as Ga/AL Land Trust, USFW, USGS, GSA, AABC, DCNR, ADEM, NPS, LRCC, NSS, NWF, B'ham Audubon, NSS, SCCi, B'ham Grotto, Gadsden Grotto, Dogwood City Grotto, Central Ala Grotto
3. Preservation & Education
We have rehabilitated and maintain the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation designated "2016 Places in Peril" historic mid-century modern former commercial Visitors Center, which is currently used as the Education & Gathering Center for educational resources, tours, workshops, events, retreats and programs. It is equipped with a a handicap restroom, kitchenette, heat and air, and tables & chairs that seat up to 30 people. We update & maintain MCAL website and social media, encourage & cooperate in science based research, welcome visitors, retreats, workshops, lead educational tours with people locally, throughout State, Nation & worldwide. We attend conferences, workshops, lectures, apply for memberships & grants, collect and maintain resources & educational materials., maintain an office for day to day operations.
