Mission Statement

The mission of the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation is to ensure the availability of funds necessary for full exploration of all the scientific possibilities that diabetes research is generating. The Research Foundation's sole purpose is to raise gifts for diabetes through individuals, corporations, and philanthropic organizations. A minimum of 80% of each contribution directly supports research.

ADA Research Program

ADA's Nationwide Research Program uses a peer review model that evaluates research projects based on scientific merit. Categories of funding include Research Funding (Research Awards, Clinical Research Awards, Junior Faculty Awards, Career Development Awards) and Training Awards (Postdoctoral Fellowships, Medical Scholars, Physician-Scientist Awards). Individual grants range from $30,000 for a one-year Medical Scholar to an $800,000 five-year Career Development Award. This program is currently funding more than 340 scientists in 200 top institutions throughout the United States.

Mr. Larry Hausner

BIO

Larry Hausner is Chief Executive Officer of the American Diabetes Association, the nation’s largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop DiabetesSM.

Hausner has been with the American Diabetes Association since October 2007, bringing more than 20 years of extensive management experience in nonprofits, coupled with a strong understanding of mission-driven organizations.

He brought this focus on mission to the American Diabetes Association with not only a renewed commitment to funding research, but also a strong focus on advocacy efforts, local programs, education initiatives and prevention programs to both improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes and for those at risk of getting this disease.

Currently, Hausner serves as Vice Chairperson of the National Health Council (NHC), co-chair of the Centers for Public Health Roundtable, and a member of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) strategic planning strategy grouHausner served as Chief Operating Officer for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where he had oversight and management of revenue generation, finance and budget, information technology, patient services, public policy, marketing and communications, human resources, and field management.  Revenues for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society grew under his leadership from $165 million to more than $270 million.

In his nonprofit experiences before Leukemia, Hausner was employed by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for 15 years, where he rose to the position of Chief of Staff.

Hausner earned a Master’s degree in marketing management from the Univeristy of Rhode Island.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing with a minor in accounting from the same university.  In addition, he studied performance management systems and governance as leadership at Harvard University, and strategic planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
