TEEM - TUCSON EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT FOR MINORITIES
Preparing Our Youth to Meet the Challenges of the 21st Century
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
African American youth are underserved in the community. Reading and math levels are lower than grade level for many Black students. Graduation and college attendance rates are also lower than the general population. Programs that address these disparities are not well supported in the public education system. TEEM strives to identify and provide services for African American youth to help them be successful in the K-12 grade levels and inspire and assist the pursuit of higher education.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
HBCU College Tours
TEEM offers educational tours to Historical Black Colleges and Universities - HBCUs. HBCU tours occur during spring break for middle school students and after Thanksgiving for high school students. Many HBCUs associated with TEEM offer our participants free college applications and scholarship opportunities. The students also learn about the local culture near HBCUs through TEEM guided city tours and activities.
SAFE - Summer Educational Foundations for Enrichment
The SAFE program is designed to stave summer learning loss by providing weekly educational activities. The program runs annually on the Saturdays in June. Students from grades 3-12 are welcome. TEEM offers its Read2Succeed program to help raise grade level reading and math interactive software to increase math prowess. Students have African American history sessions, engineering projects and arts activities, such as dance or painting. Students receive breakfast and lunch and parents are welcome to attend. Workshops in engineering, technology, reading, math and the arts are taught by professionals in their field, consistent with the goal of inspiring young minds through interaction with proven successful leaders.
African American Youth Heritage Day - AAYHD
In February, during Black History Month, TEEM offers high school students an opportunity to choose and attend special workshops that give insight to possibilities after high school. This program, AAYHD, occurs during a regular school day. Students register through their school counsellors and the schools provide transportation and chaperones for the event. African American students receive priority for this event, but all students are welcome. Students attend workshops for career options taught by leaders in the African American community.
African American Youth Heritage Day is a learning event that features a keynote speaker, specific workshops, a lunch program with directed activities, including booths by HBCU school representatives, local college Black fraternities and sororities, alternative learning organizations - such as career and technical schools, and more.
Read2Succeed
Read2Succeed is a reading mastery program that utilizes interactive methods to customize learning for individual student needs. This program is supplemental to the student school day, offered during school hours for youth who are below their grade level in reading. Each student is independently evaluated for their reading and fluency levels. Students engage in a variety of activities within the program to increase their reading grade level and proficiency. TEEM facilitates Read2Succeed and has an over 95% success rate in raising a child's reading level during the semester block of the program.
SMILE - Scholarship Mentoring Independence Leadership Education
The SMILE program provides college preparation tools and information to high school families. Students learn how to successfully navigate their course of study. Tutoring may be provided if needed. Students learn how and when to apply for college admission and financial aid. Families learn to plan and optimize college and career options. Students and their families are encouraged to become self advocates and TEEM provides advocacy if necessary along with parents and schools to optimize learning and support programs within schools.
STEAM Academy
STEAM Academy is specifically designed for elementary school students to participate in activities that enhance their ability to grasp ideas and concepts from different perspectives. Students utilize creative and innovative approaches towards understanding the world from a scientific viewpoint. This program is offered in the school during the regular school day. The children do hands-on projects to both engage an interest in science and the arts and build the love of learning.
