Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Vero Beach Choral Society aims to do three things, which are all interrelated: (1) perform professional level choral music in Vero Beach and the surrounding area; (2) collaborate with local student musicians in order to enrich and encourage their musical experience; (3) support local student musicians through its scholarship fund. Thus, the VBCS is not merely an organisation for getting together to feel good about music, but rather an organisation that directly benefits the local community both through making available high level choral music as well as through support music education in a variety of ways.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Goal 1: To perform professional level choral music.
The VBCS makes this happen by auditioning all new members. It expects professional discipline and attentiveness at all its rehearsals. And it hires high level professionals to direct and accompany its performances.
Goal 2: To collaborate with local student musicians in order to enrich and encourage their musical experience.
The VBCS each year collaborates at one of its concerts with local music students (mostly elementary school to high school), not simply by having them perform pieces on their own, but also by singing alongside them, often on major choral works such as Faure's Requiem or Rutter's Gloria. This way of performing with local student musicians ensures that the students come away with a musical experience rarely accessible to such young musicians.
Goal 3: To support local student musicians through its scholarship fund.
The VBCS holds auditions most years to find the best student musical talent in Indian River County. These students are not only required, however, to be going on to major in music, they must also maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher in order to be eligible for the scholarship grant. Students are chosen not simply by their musical talent but also by their character and ability to be successful and well-rounded musicians.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The VBCS is able to achieve these goals because of the support it gets from local businesses and from individuals who love our mission. The VBCS receives all its funds from donations to the organisation. The talent both among singers and that VBCS has with its paid artistic director and other musicians makes us fully capable of achieving our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since its inception in 1984, the Vero Beach Choral Society has spearheaded the performance and promotion of the choral arts and music in the Vero Beach area. In its long history, the VBCS has brought some of the finest choral music to Vero Beach, including performances of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", Mozart's "Requiem", Haydn's "Creation", and many more wonderful concerts.
The VBCS has also traveled far and wide to sing in some of the world's most prestigious venues with trips to Estonia, Coventry Cathedral in England, Carnegie Hall in New York City, Prague, Salzburg, and other destinations.
On the anniversary of its 30th year, the VBCS received an official proclamation from the City of Vero Beach in recognition of its contribution to the community. The VBCS was recognised not only for performing high quality music in Vero Beach, and for helping to develop a rich culture of music in the city, but also for supporting the music education of students through collaborations with local music student organisations and through its scholarship program, devoted to supporting local music students who go on to study and perform music.
Despite the long and successful history of the VBCS, it currently is experiencing a time of transition as many of the very long term members have retired from the organisation. This has led to something of a re-shaping of the organisation as it seeks to not only maintain the excellent level of music but actually to find a higher level of achievement musically. Financially, this has been a difficult transition, and the VBCS is currently seeking to once again increase its donor base.
