Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Working to provide more long term financial stability, and full cost funding of the Film Society. Part of that strategy is to purchase the real estate/building that houses the Film Society/Film Center to reduce our annual operating expenses as they relate to our venue.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Martha's Vineyard Film Center
The Martha's Vineyard Film Society is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to screening the best in independent films, classics, documentaries, and world cinema. It also produces the annual MV International Film Festival in September.
In 2012 we also proudly completed the construction of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center, which houses the Marilyn Meyerhoff Theatre, a state of the art digital cinema and stage with 180 stadium configured seats.
Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival
6 day/night festival celebrating world cinema with speakers, filmmakers, and dialogue.
MV Environmental Film Festival
Annual 4 day/night festival dedicated to films with an environmental or nature perspective. In collaboration with the Vineyard Conservation Society and other local scientific and environmental agencies.
Filmusic Festival
Music and film flow naturally together. Our third annual Filmusic Festival will bring you closer to the music you love, or introduce you to some you’ve never known, with great films and live music!
Documentary Week
Documentary films have become the conscience of the nation, providing a deeper study of contemporary, and often unnoticed, social issues. By using the unique medium of film, documentarians are able to cultivate more compelling and fruitful discussion by mixing strongly-drive narratives with vivid imagery.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are a year-round organizations that collaborates with over two dozen other non-profits to bring relevant films and discussions to the island.
We believe that partnerships with other community organizations and leaders provides the best way to understand what our community needs.
We make our theater available to schools, community organizations, and other parties for community gatherings.

We are an efficiently run organization that utilizes the talents of its senior staff and our community partners to operate year-round in a challenging seasonal market. We leverage our community partnerships to provide programming assistance and people.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We've accomplished so much in the past 7.5 years. We've gone from a once a week film screening focus to building a state of the art film center, and helping to renovate two historic movie theaters that were closed to now operating three theaters on the island. Our operating budget has grown from $65,000 annually to $1 million in 2019 of which 75% is earned income from operations.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
