Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
OUR SHARED FATE
TO REVERSE CONTAMINATION IN THE OCEAN FOOD WEB BY CONVEYING TO THE PUBLIC, MEDIA AND GOVERNING AGENCIES THE THREAT TO HUMANS AND MARINE MAMMALS FROM TOXINS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT. WE BROADLY DISSEMINATE INFORMATION TO EDUCATE AND AFFECT CHANGE.
Eating Dolphins - The Diabetes Connection
Investigation of connection between consumption of dolphin meat and epidemic of diabetes focused on fishing village of San Jose, Peru. We went to Peru to investigate the mass mortality of dolphin in spring 2012. We discovered that hunting of dolphins is widespread in Peru and that people who eat the meat have high incidence of disease. We are currently testing dolphin eaters for levels of contaminants in their tissues.
STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF PERUVIAN DOLPHINS FOR SHARK BAIT
EACH YEAR PERUVIAN FISHERMEN KILL 15,000 DOLPHINS FOR USE AS SHARK BAIT. BLUEVOICE IS WORKING TO END THIS TRAGEDY ON SEVERAL FRONTS: WORKING WITH THE PERUVIAN GOVERNMENT TO ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS AGAINST HARMING DOLPHINS AND ENACT A BAN ON HARPOONS ON FISHING VESSELS; WORKING WITH RESTAURANTS TO STOP SERVING SHARK AND DOLPHIN MEAT; EDUCATING PEOPLE OF THE HEALTH RISKS FROM EATING DOLPHIN. WE ARE MAKING A DOCUMENTARY FILM WHICH WILL BRING THIS TO INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
It is our intention to end the slaughter of dolphins in Peru for use as shark bait. At the same time we are working to get Peru to study the desperately depleted shark populations off its coast. Ending the shark fishery will spare the lives of thousands of dolphins and prevent the extirpation of several shark species off Peru.
In addition, many thousands of dolphins are killed for human consumption. Not only does this slaughter dolphins but their meat is highly contaminated and is known to be harmful to the humans who eat it.
Peru is but one example of using dolphins as bush meat. Our documentary film work will expose other locations where dolphins are killed for food.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We use film, video and internet to broadly raise awareness of the problems described. Publicity leads to action and demands nationally and worldwide for a solution. Our information is also spread through standard media channels such as NBC News and Huffington Post.
We have conducted training sessions for police to enable them to recognize illegal sales of dolphin meat and arrest those violating dolphin protection laws.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our executive director has worked for CBS News, United Press International and made more than 70 films for television. BlueVoice has been active in Japan for more than a decade and has succeeded in ending the killing of dolphins in many Japanese villages.
We have an active and effective coalition of organizations from Peru, Germany, Switzerland and France working to achieve our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Peruvian state's attorney has brought criminal charges against the fishermen who killed dolphins in front of our cameras. This is the first step in moving the Peruvian government to expand enforcement of its laws protecting dolphins.
We have obtained the damning documentary footage of the slaughter of dolphins and the overfishing of sharks.
Our campaign to enlist restaurants in the effort to end the slaughter of dolphins and overfishing of sharks is moving ahead with excellent results.
Our short version film has been broadcast in Europe and won a major award in Europe's largest green film festival.
We have raised most of the money required to expand the film to one hour for international broadcast.
We have not yet presented our hour long version of our film to major international television buyers.
