Making opportunity possible
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. The country has long been plagued by high rates of poverty - 80% live below the poverty line, and unemployment - 40% of the people are unemployed. Haitians want to work. They want to provide for themselves and their families, but unfortunately, many lack job skills and employment opportunities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Port-de-Paix Sewing Program
Our Waves of Mercy sewing program started in 2015 with 10 students. Our first class graduated in April 2018. A new class started in 2018 and will graduate in 2021. They are learning to make a variety of everyday and special occasion clothes.
Mole St. Nicolas Sewing Program
In April 2016, we began a new partnership with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission's Mole St. Nicolas campus to start a new sewing program there. The initial class was in session for two years. After the second year, we put the class on pause until we could hire a new teacher. We resumed classes in 2018 when one of our graduates from the Port-de-Paix class started teaching two new classes.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We're giving Haitians the opportunity to learn a trade that can change their lives, and their families' lives, forever. Our sewing programs provide students with the practical skills, and the underpinning knowledge they need to find and participate in meaningful work to support themselves and their families.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We started two sewing programs in Northwest Haiti, which is the poorest part of Haiti. The classes are taught by Haitian sewing teachers, because we believe in Haitians teaching Haitians. The students start by learning basic sewing techniques, and then learn advanced techniques as they progress through the three year program. The students learn how to make a variety of men's, women's, and children's clothing. They also learn how to make school uniforms, and how to do alterations. One of the major advantages of our programs is that the students can earn money as they continue learning how to sew. Many of our students make extra money by doing alterations and making school uniforms. The students are also making purses that are sold in the United States. Each student receives a portion of the proceeds for the purses they make, and the remaining proceeds are reinvested back into the sewing programs. So in addition to learning how to sew, the program also creates jobs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have two well-established mission partners, Waves of Mercy in Port-de-Paix, and Northwest Haiti Christian Mission in Mole St. Nicolas, that help oversee our day-to-day operations. We also have two talented Haitian sewing teachers, and two secure well-equipped classrooms for our programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our first class started in Port-de-Paix in 2015. They graduated in April 2018. When they started, none of the students knew how to sew. Today, several of them making a living from sewing. One of our graduates become the teacher of the new Mole St. Nicolas sewing class.
Three new classes started in 2018 and they will graduates in 2021. They're also learning how to make a variety of everyday and special occasion clothing. Many of the students are already selling their clothes and earning an income.
