What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Environmental Health
High levels of particle and ozone pollution continue to pose a serious health risk to Bay Area residents. Air pollution can lead to the onset of asthma, decreased lung function and even death. We work hard to improve indoor air quality as more than 90% of our time is spent indoors. To reduce the effects of environmental pollutants on our lungs, we provide various programs aimed at making our air healthier to breathe. These include:
•Indoor Air Quality Assessments
•Silicon Valley Clean Cities Coalition
•Youth For A Cool Earth
•Transportation Projects
•Soy Biobased Products
Tobacco Control
Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death, killing close to a half-million Americans annually. Furthermore, a growing body of evidence has shown the deadly effects that secondhand smoke can have on us and our children. While we enjoy some of the lowest overall smoking rates in the state (7.7% in 2013), tobacco use is higher among our youth -- 9% for whites, 12% for blacks and Latinos. In order to reduce the impact of tobacco use and addiction in our community, we offer a number of programs focused on cessation, prevention and education to promote a healthier lifestyle:
Ash Kickers Smoking Cessation Program
•Counseling Leadership Against Smoking Pressures
•Communities Putting Prevention To Work
•Flavor Tobacco & E-Cigarettes
•Electronic Cigarettes -- Facts & Myths
•"Protecting Youth from Flavored Tobacco" Fact Sheet
•Quit The Hits Youth Cessation Program
•Smoke-Free Movies Project
•Smokeless Saturday School
•Smoke-Free Housing in Silicon Valley
•Smoke-Free Outdoor Dining
•Tobacco Retail Licensing
Asthma and Other Lung Disease
In California, as many as 1 in 5 children may be suffering from asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children and the #1 source of school absences among chronic illness. In an effort to reduce the burden of asthma, we offer a variety of programs for children suffering from this chronic illness as well as for their families. These programs are designed to educate children and their families about their disease and related allergies. Programs are offered in the form of school classes, support groups as well as a unique camp experience. Programs offered include:
•Multi-Session Asthma Management Classes
•Camp Superstuff
•Community Asthma Forums
•In-Service Training
Community Outreach
In addition to our signature programs, Breathe California is proud to offer many other general services to the community. These include equipment provision, health fairs, lung screenings, presentations, and trainings.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious breathing disorder that affects millions of Americans, and the medical equipment prescribed to treat sleep apnea is frequently not covered by insurance. In keeping with our mission, Breathe California conducts a popular program in which we accept donated CPAP and BiPAP machines and redistribute them on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you have an unused CPAP machine or other respiratory equipment, please consider donating it. There is substantial need for such equipment.
Worksite Wellness
The Worksite Wellness program orientation gives insight on how Breathe California of the Bay Area assist organizations to create a culture of wellness that support the well-being, morale and productivity of their employees. Some of the initiatives that we offer includes providing consultation & material, company wellness assessment, and facilitating guidelines & policies.
This program aims to help:
- Develop physical activity opportunities
- Increasing healthy food/beverages
- Creating eco-friendly business standards
