Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Public/Charter Sails
Two hour cruises on 1888 National Historic Landmark Oyster Sloop Priscilla over the Great South Bay - Adults $45, Seniors $35, Children $20. Exclusive charters are available for up to 13 passengers, call the Museum for pricing.
Special Events
Seafood Festival, held the last weekend in August and the Halloween Boat Burning are the two major nautical theme events that attract a large number of visitors to the Museum and contribute substantially to operating revenues.
Bay Days Summer Camp
Eight-week day camp, tailored to Primary School aged children, registration by the week, specializing in natural and nautical history on the Great South Bay. Activities include ferry trip weekly to Sunken Forest on Fire Island, excursion on oyster dredge sloop Priscilla and visits to a marine laboratory.
Boat Building
Two boat shops attract volunteers interested in woodworking who every year build boats either from kits or using traditional methods for raffle/sale to help defray costs and raise funds for Museum operations.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Programmatic goals include expansion of educational offerings, exhibits and activities. Financial goals include growing the endowment to $1 million from its current $450,000 over the next 5-8 years; creation of a building fund to pay for capital improvements.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Develop new programs and partnerships, such as the current partnership with the Navy League Sea Cadet program, to attract young people to the Museum and to be a part of the activities at the facilities. Develop additional alliances with the tourism industry to promote visitation. Expand the public sailing and charter program with the Coast Guard certified National Landmark 1888 Oyster sloop Priscilla.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
New thirty year license agreement with Suffolk County Parks Department for use and occupancy of the buildings and grounds provides long term stability for the Museum. Funding commitments are in place to: 1. complete the reconfiguration of the Museum boat basin and entrance channel to the Great South Bay and 2. construct a marine railway into a new vessel maintenance facility. This 5,000 square foot building will be multi-purpose and will be adaptable for indoor special events.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Capital improvements and major maintenance on the buildings and grounds move ahead, but very slowly, due to other priorities that the County government has. The thousands of people who attend special events at the Museum spread the word and return themselves, but revenues from new sources, besides membership dues and events, are slow to develop. Like the operational characteristics of the sailboats in the LIMM collection, movement forward is not in a straight line!
