What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Patient Care
At San Diego Hospice, we cherish the dignity of each patient through
superior treatment and respectful personalized attention.
• Through the Charitable Care Fund we help more than 400 patients
and their families annually who otherwise would be unable to afford
hospice care.
• Our Children's Hospice Fund supports the only hospice and palliative
care programs for children in San Diego County.
• The Volunteer Fund helps recruit, train, and support over 600
volunteers, who donate more than 84,000 hours of service, saving
the organization approximately $1.4 million annually.
• The Critical Care Fund enables San Diego Hospice to provide
comprehensive, 24-hour inpatient care to patients and their families
who need this type of service most.
Family Care
The Center for Grief Care and Education (CGCE) at San Diego Hospice helps hearts heal with programs that help families and friends discover new dimensions of meaning following the loss of a loved one.
• The Community Bereavement Fund allows CGCE to support over
9,000 people throughout San Diego County annually who have
experienced loss.
• Our Children's Bereavement Service Fund supports programs that give
children and teens struggling with death's emotional aftermath a variety
of coping skills.
• The Counseling Training Fund makes possible the largest Counseling
Internship Program -- 30 interns a year, on average -- focusing on grief
and loss in America.
Education and Research
The Institute for Palliative Medicine (IPM) at San Diego Hospice
trains tomorrow's medical professionals to provide the best possible
quality of life for patients and their families.
• Through its U.S. Palliative Medicine Fellowship Fund, IPM hosts
the largest program in the U.S. in which physicians gain expertise
in this specialty (includes named fellowships).
• The International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Fund allows our
experts to train physicians from abroad in San Diego as well as in
their home countries. IPM is instrumental in originating hospice
care in Mongolia, Egypt, Ukraine, Vietnam and other countries.
• Through the Center for Research Fund, our multi-disciplinary
practitioners develop new ways to relieve suffering and improve
the quality of life of patients and families, and enhance
the training of healthcare professionals.
