Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

In 2000, we accommodated more than 10,800 inpatient admissions; over 1,200 new babies; over 160,000 outpatient visits, including emergency care and same-day surgery; made 43,420 "house calls" via our VNA Home Health Care affiliate; and over 61,000 patients visited our primary care practices. We also provided over $9 million in charity care, including uncompensated care for Medicare and Medicaid patients, and funding of the Portland Community Free Clinic, which serves those who lack adequate health insurance. Mercy performed over 11,000 mammograms and nearly 250 biopsies, and our Breast Health Resource Center provided support to over 2,800 women and their families. Mercy offers a wide range of breast-related services: risk analysis and screening, family history, and referral for genetic evaluation; breast self-exam classes, mammography, annual breast exams; stereotactic biopsy and advanced breast biopsy imaging (ABBI); prompt diagnosis and evaluation for many tests and procedures; second opinions and multidisciplinary consultations; information about a variety of treatment options; surgery, treatment for post-breast-surgery syndrome, and lymphodema treatment. Our Oncology Hematology Center is staffed by doctors and nurses providing diagnosis, chemotherapy and support services for all cancer patients. Substance abuse is one of the most prevalent health problems Maine confronts, and it takes a myriad of forms--from the nightly six-pack of beer, to gradual reliance on prescription drugs, to the growing incidence of addiction to heroin and other opiates. The Recovery Center helps more families and individuals gain freedom from addiction than any other program in Maine. The Eating Disorders program is the only comprehensive inpatient and day treatment program in Maine. Individuals with Eating Disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, often need intensive treatment to break the cycle of self-destructive, obsessive behaviors. Staffed by experienced nurses, therapists, nutritionists, and physicians, the Eating Disorders Program offers a unique balance of inpatient and day treatment services to meet our clients' needs. Family therapy is available and support and education for family members is a critical component of treatment. Radiological capabilities are growing in important ways. In July, we welcomed two Dartmouth-trained interventional radiologists; in September we installed the most advanced multi-scan equipment in Maine and in 2001 we will have an on-site Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) available 24 hours a day. In December Mercy gained approval to develop a new cardiac catheterization lab which will open in 2002. From the celebration of new life in The Birthplace to support during the final days of living, we're prepared to help families with a lifetime of heatlhcare needs. Mercy Primary Care Centers offer obstetrics, pediatrics, family practice and internal medicine, our practitioners help patients improve their lifestyle choices and manage acute and chronic illnesses effectively. Mercy Health Center provides people with convenient access to several important resources for maintaining health: bone densitometry, diabetes education, lab, x-ray and, most notably, our physical rehabilitation program including a state-of-the-art aquatic therapy whirl pool. Through our VNA Home Health Care affiliate, we are committed to providing the same high level of care outside Mercy Hospital at home and in the community. The skilled nurses and therapists conduct evaluations and assessments of home safety, guide the rehabilitation process through therapy and instruction, help individuals and families cope with a terminal illness, and hold educational, screening, testing and immunization clinics for businesses and the community at large.
