Mission

Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture is a school and residency program in Maine for emerging visual artists. Characterized by risk-taking, mentorship, and peer-to-peer exchange, it brings together a talented, diverse group of artists for an experience that spurs creative growth and dynamic interaction between artists from different backgrounds. Since 1946, Skowhegan has given artists an opportunity to push the boundaries of their practices and refine their individual voices. Neither a traditional school nor a retreat, Skowhegan's 9-week summer program, held on a rural 350-acre campus, provides artists with an extended period of independent and collaborative work. Participants and faculty live and work side by side and the assembled community represents a broad range of artistic perspectives, modes of practice, and professional experiences. In this safe environment, artists are encouraged to take risks, free from the expectations of the marketplace and academia. Alumni report that Skowhegan marks a pivotal turning point in their practice and that the impact of the summer extends far beyond the session itself. Skowhegan's success lies in its ability to identify and nurture committed and promising artists who are selected for potential, not financial ability or educational pedigree. This critical policy is made possible by a robust fellowship program that allows Skowhegan to provide financial aid to any artist in need.

Skowhegan Nine-Week Summer Residency

Founded in 1946 by artists for artists on a rural campus in Central Maine, Skowhegan is one of the country’s foremost educational experiences for artists. Every year, 65 emerging artists and 11 faculty members come together for the intensive nine-week session, held on a nearly 350-acre campus in Maine. Skowhegan’s early roster of attendees—paired with the founders’ commitment to aesthetic and intellectual freedom—established the school as a prominent force in American art.

Today it is a place where artists can push the boundaries of their practice and where the highly diverse and supportive artist community that forms anew each summer provides lively exchange both in and out of the studio. In any contemporary art context, Skowhegan is a common thread. Generations of artists are linked by the shared experience of the rural landscape, the history of those artists who have come before, and the constant conversation about art.

A merit-based admissions process ensures that Skowhegan accepts incredibly diverse classes of artists-- in background and in practice--and a robust fellowship program enables Skowhegan to provide financial aid to any artist in need.
