Residential Services for People with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism

At Creative Works, we are dedicated to offering many different choices of residential care because we believe that creating communities of inclusion begins at home. As one of the largest residential providers in the state of Maine, Creative Works provides a range of indispensable services that are uniquely designed to meet the diverse needs of adults with intellectual disabilities as well as those on the autism spectrum.

Our services range from our comprehensive, home-based 24/7 Residential Care program to a few hours of individualized supports per week through our Independent Living program. Additionally, our popular Shared Living program offers an option of care where participants are thoughtfully matched with a family who open up their personal residence to provide care.

Whether acquired from an accident or stroke or due to genetic and neurological conditions, brain injury is a deeply impactful experience. One of our fastest growing areas of support, our Brain Injury programs provide an array of individualized, home-based services for adults with brain injuries.

For some people, brain injury is a life-altering event that can require sudden and intensive support. For others, it can be a condition a person has experienced their entire life. However a persons life is affected by brain injury, our services provide vital support through our 24/7 Residential Care and In-Home Supports programs for individuals throughout southern and central Maine. Whether a participant needs round-the-clock or as-needed care, our programs are customizable and comprehensive because we recognize that, just as no two people are the same, no two brain injuries are the same.

We believe that a job provides much more than a paycheck. Employment provides independence, a sense of community, the pride and self-esteem that comes from being a productive team member, and personal fulfillment and satisfaction.

We are dedicated to providing Employment Services because we recognize that inclusive communities are comprised of inclusive workplaces. Although many workplaces strive to meet accessibility standards, having a job is still a commonly unmet need for many individuals with disabilities. Our Employment Services are dedicated to providing one-on-one job coaching and to breaking down the barriers to inclusion that exist in todays workplaces for employees with disabilities. Based on individual needs and goals, our job coaches act as a liaison between an employee and their employer, provide assistance with developing self-advocacy skills, and encourage natural workplace supports.

Since 1967, Creative Works has pioneered exceptional Community Services that provide critical community-based daytime activities for adults with disabilities and autism. What began as a grassroots venture serving just a few people has blossomed into a network of five locations throughout southern and central Maine that now serve over 200 people. Through our many years of growth, our mission remains the same: creating communities of inclusion.

Our five service locations in central and southern Maine York Community Services, Cumberland Community Services, and Saco Community Services, 5 County Community Services & Augusta Community Services are places where people can come together to explore what makes them curious, develop avenues for self-expression and cultivate natural connections. Our locations are shared spaces full of rich resources like art studios, fully-equipped kitchens where delicious meals are prepared jointly, bountiful gardens, technology centers, and exercise rooms.

Since its inception, Creative Works has pioneered supports guided by a strong focus: community inclusion. Available widely across the state, our Shared Living option, which has grown in five years to serve over 100 adults with disabilities, provides a choice of support that is truly inclusive. Participants are matched with a Shared Living Provider (either an individual or a family) who not only welcomes them into their home, but who is dedicated to developing a familial environment where the person supported can thrive, create a home life of their choosing and cultivate lasting relationships.

We recognize that a Shared Living arrangement is a big commitment for both individuals and providers, which is why we use a personalized matching process to ensure long-term placement. We collaborate with each individual and, guided by their geographic and personal preferences, we provide the tools necessary for establishing and maintaining a natural support system and access to local resources.

The Creative Works Intermittent Home Supports program offers a flexible approach to services where individuals receive direct one-to-one support in their preferred, most natural environments: their own homes and communities. Also known as Independent Living, our Intermittent Home Supports program enables individuals to develop a schedule of support ranging from a couple hours to a maximum of 84 hours per week.

An excellent choice for those with an existing natural support system, our staff add an extra layer of care that equips individuals, regardless of their level of need, to be fully engaged with and involved in their communities. Whether an individual needs help with accessing public transportation, managing medical appointments, finances, outings, or cooking a meal at home, our staff are available to provide the support that is needed.

For more than a decade, Creative Works has offered Maine state-certified Targeted Community Case Management Services focused on meeting the diverse needs and wants of adults with intellectual disabilities and autism. Serving more than 150 Mainers, we provide Case Management services for people who live on their own, with family, or in a staffed group setting provided by another organization.

Our team consists of 10 Community Case Managers, one of whom specializes solely in Care Coordination for individuals with acquired brain injury. Each of our Case Managers are conditionally or fully Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) whose qualifications meet or exceed the standards set by the Maine Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS). To ensure individuals served receive the best possible Case Management supports, our team members manage caseloads of no more than 20 people each, enabling them to be responsive and dedicated advocates.
